Time off from work/ Travel???

Hey everyone I have a question...

How long did everyone take off from work?

I have a job that depending on what shift I am on can be involve some heavy lifting (not too much but some), long standing hours, lots of moving my arms with leaning, pulling and cutting, and some heavy equipment. I have been talking to my supervisor and informing her of everything as I find it out and she is willing to put me on a different shift (swings/graves) when I come back to help me out. It isn't guaranteed since her boss can tell her I have to go to day shift. So I was just wondering what restrictions your surgeon gave you.

I will have about 6 weeks of vacation/sick by the end of the year, I'm going to try and apply for short term disability, and FMLA(to protect my job).

Also did your surgeon give you any restrictions on travel?? Just wondering.

Thanks in advance for all of your wonderful answers.

Nathalie :)

Hi Nathalie,

I took around two weeks off and felt fine by the time I went back to work. I was told though not to life anything heavy for a couple of months. I would really abide by that. I didn't listen to the doctor's advice and did too much walking the first week and pulled a muscle.  If you need to protect your job, I'd go for short term disability and because it requires all that movement, I'd go for more time off.  I'd go with whatever your surgeon tells you to do. Make sure he/she knows what type of work you do when talking about returning to work.

I tend to be someone *****covers quickly from surgery and I work at a desk so take what I say with a grain of salt in terms of recovery.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the info. I will definitely be talking to my surgeon and making sure he knows exactly what I do for work.

I was told at least 2 weeks if you have a desk job. 6-8 weeks if your job involved heavy lifting, stooping, bending etc. I would plan on at least 6

Thanks for the input. I was planning on 6 weeks if not more if I could swing it. But my supervisor wanted to know approximately how long. So I told them that I didn't know and that I wasn't even sure when I would have surgery. It may be end of this year (doubt it but possible) or the beginning of next year. Who knows at this point.

I guess it depends on how well you heal.. I took three wks off so I could properly heal.. I'm required to tote a printer & computer around.. so I got a flash drive so I did not have to tote my printer around.. but my DOC told me not to carry any thing over 15 lbs for approx. a month.. But anyways.. I could not see coming back to work after a week I LOOKED A HOT MESS..

You will do fine

Hey girly!!

I am planning on six weeks only cause at the end of my last surgery I got an infection in the surgical site and needed 6-8 weeks in full. I dont want to risk it again.

God bless our troops

I guess then I will take my 6 weeks. I had surgery in 2002 and I was out of school/work for 3 months. I don't remember any infection but it was an open surgery and the first time I left my house I got the stomach flu and then got something else and then something else. I guess it is better to be safe than sorry. Plus I can get exercise in and catch up on some reading while recovering :)

I took two months off work.  Your job has to honor whatever the doctor says in his written excuse.
Without struggle, there is no progress.
