So I am a pre surgery patient and am just wondering if anyone has had alcohol post op and how long past the operation did you have some? My brother is getting married next August and I wanted to be able to participate in the festivities. I just wanna know if that is at all possible?

The standard is to wait 1 year post-op before consuming alcohol.  Ask your surgeon what he recommends.

Because our new pouches or tummys are so small the alcohol is absorbed quickly into the blood stream and make you really really REALLY tipsy FAST!!! You have to be careful. Also keep in mind that mix drinks are sometimes higher in sugar content if they are made with fruit juices and can make you dump. Fizzy, bubbly drinks like beer and champagne will leave gas in your pouch that can stretch out your tummy.

If you happen to be newly post-op at the wedding perhaps you can have a sip at the toast, but be aware that pushing it too hard too soon can possibly make you really sick.

My big drinking episode was a New Years eve here.  I had a total of three drinks that Luanna made me.  So over the course of an entire nite, I was tipsy sober, tipsy sober, and tipsy and sober.  I just choose not to drink, haven't for over 20 years, at the wedding I was at last night, I poured out and gave Doug every bit of what I had except for one sip and he could not have my strawberry that has been soaking in the champagne.  That was enough for me, and I still had a good time!

like monica said, be careful! Drinking alcohol is a completely different experience post RNY... Go slowly... figure out how your body reacts to i****ch the sugar content... but, it's fun to get a little buzz after a few sips... for me, I don't take it very much further than that... it's a LOT of calories with NO food benefit, and I don't like how I react with too much alcohol. But, I do imbibe upon occasion in the right cir****tances with the right people...

Dr. Khalili is also my doctor and they are very strict about not drinking in the first year.  They can't control what you do.. but they do suggest it.  It is just for our own good.  Alcohol dehydrates and it has sugar.  Those are the reasons.  I'd ask Sonya (the dietician) and Dr. Khalili about your brothers wedding.  Just be honest.  I think I know what they will say but it is ultimately up to you.

I recommend to wait a year. It's learning how much to drink
post-op is what we have to manage.
