My total NSV Weekend - x-post
This weekend Mini-Mac and I went to down to San Diego. I was going for some triathlon-related activities and she was going to visit her favorite cousin.
We drove down in my new RAV4 along with Herbie, my bicycle. We split the drive over two days to make it easier on me. Between that and a big lack of traffic, the drive was one of the best we've experienced since we moved to NorCal 15 years ago.
Friday night I went to a party and met "TriBobbie" who had gastric bypass two years ago and is the Open Water Swim coach for the local tri club. I'd been talking to her online and also to a few other gals from a group called GOTRIbal -- we're dedicated to empowering women through sport, particularly triathlon, and to making triathlon less of a guy's club.
Sat. morning a few of us met for an Open Water Swim at La Jolla Shores. The rest of the gals went running after, but I'm resting my calf and not running outside of races, so I didn't go. Afterwards, we met at a local restaurant for brunch.
The rest of the day I spent with my family including going to Ramona for Oktoberfest.
The next morning was the big day that I'd driven down there for. It started with the US Women's Triathlon Series Super Sprint tri. (A Super Sprint is half the distance of a Sprint.) I'd signed up for the shorter distance because I have a race this weekend and I didn't want to overdo. But, as I was getting ready, I realized I had a shot at the podium in my age group!
Did I do it? No. I came in fourth. But I'm still ecstatic. I remember doing my first tri back in April and being so happy that I came in 2nd to last instead of last in my age group and here I was, at the end of the season, within seconds of a 3rd place finish!
Afterwards, 25 of the GOTRIbal girls went over to Coronada Island and biked with Chrissie Wellington, the current and three-time World Ironman Champion for the women. She was so nice and down-to-earth and I got to talk to her on the bike ride and afterwards, when we were doing a Q&A at lunch, she remembered my name!!
Why was this a NSV weekend? Well, the people I was hanging out with never knew me as fat, for one thing. It was just a completely different experience to fit right into a group and not be self-conscious about my weight or to not be "that gal who lost all the weight" as I am know in my own tri club.
Plus the 4th place finish and Chrissie remembering me, of course.
