Hi Alley,

I hear of some wonderful doctors on this site, but I can only speak about my wonderful doctor.  His name is Dr. Lamar and I love him to pieces!!!  He is very honest and straight forward.  He tells you like it is and doesn't surgar coat anything.  Also, everything he told me was right on...he is my lifesaver.

Good luck in choose the right doctor for yourself.

If you need any information I am always willing to share...

Michele

Hi Alley! Welcome to the Cali Board! I applaud you for wanting to do reseach on your surgeon. That is an awsome first step. Knowledge is power. I used Kaiser and went to Pacific Bariatric Surgery in San Deigo. I had Dr. George Zorn, who is an awsome surgeon. He is very caring and will take as much time as you need to help you. I am sure everybody will tell you their surgeon is the best, and I believe it takes a special surgeon to choose this line of medicine. The best thing to do is see what surgeons your insurance covers and research them. I wish you luck. Congratulations on your decision to research WLS. If you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Friendship & Support,

Hi ya Alley,

Welcome to the California board.  Good to see someone doing some research,,so many times we are told what doctor to see that we don't have a choice.  I would first call your insurance company and see if they have suggestions on surgeons.  Sometimes you can only see doctors that are with Centers of Excellence (COE).  That right there will narrow your search.  That would be a great place to start.  I would tell you that my doctor was the best, but I won't, while my surgery was fine, his after care sucks.  Not much support from his office or from him.  Even now, 3 years out from surgery (well almost), I spoke to someone who had surgery with him recently and she had the same problem I had, so nothing has changed.  Too bad because he is a good surgeon, but that is not enough when having this type of surgery.

If there is anything else you want to know, please feel free to write me here, or PM me.  (private message) be glad to help you out.

Wishing you the best,

Diane

Welcome to the group, Alley.

I see you are in the San Fernando Valley. Me, too. My Dr. is Dr. Paya. He is in West Hills and operates out of West Hills Hospital and Northridge. Both hospitals are Centers of Excellence. I am very happy with him and his office staff is very nice and helpful.

Any questions, just ask
Good luck in your search.

alot depends on which surgery you're looking at And how much you're willing to spend. some of the better Drs are upwards of 30K for self pay. That goes way up for the DS and maybe down a bit for LapBand.
Another option is Mexico, not to far from Cali adn far cheaper also some very good Dr there. Some Cali Dr actulayy operate there for their self pays to make it cheaper for everyone. I know Milton Owens does/did this a while back once ot twice a month.
Cost being no object I of course would pick my Dr( out USC university Hosp) as IMO hes one of the very best on this earth, but everyone feels the same about their Dr. They do have a semiar once a month in Pasadena that free to attend adn you get to meet the Drs

I switched surgeons offices after getting a recommendation from the anesthesiologist who does most of the bariatric cases at the hospital where I was getting my surgery. She's seen many bariatric doctors operate where she works and she felt that Dr. Philippe Quilici was the best of the bunch.  He does all 4 of the major procedures--lapband, RNY, DS and VSG.

Quilici is based out of Burbank and these days he does most of his surgeries at Providence St. Jospeh in Burbank. His website is transmed.tv/ if you wanna check him out.
