6 lbs to lose, but which surgery

I went to my surgeon today and I was so shocked to learn I only need to loose 6lbs. I thought I would feel better about this, but now it is a reality and I don' think I was ready for it. So, now I have to decide which surgery I want. When I first started this process I really knew I wanted the lap Band, buT after going to orientation I became scared and decided the RNY was it. Now after going to my appt. today, they have added the Sleeve. So now it is a toss up between those 3. I know this subject can sometimes get heated, but please can you give me some feedback on which ever surgery you had. I would really like to hear from those who have made past their 2,3, or even 4 yr mark or more, but also from those who have just undergone surgery. I know the final decision is mine to make, but I would really like to prepare myself for just that.

Hi there,

Which surgery to have is truly a personal choice and I think you will find that people can be very passionate about their surgeries.

For me, I chose RNY along with input from my internist.  He explained that there is a hormone that is excreted in the stomach that causes hunger.  When the stomach is resected in the RNY, the hormone is somewhat slowed way down and this doesn't happen with other surgeries.  He also felt that diabetics had better success with the RNY.  Also, for me, I wanted the repercussions (dumping syndrome) of eating too much sugar to be an issue cuz I loved sugar.

The Lap Band was not something I thought was for me because of possible band slippage, and I didn't want to have a sub cutaneous port in which they would fill the band.  Again, this is a personal choice and I know some bandsters who are so very successful and who love their lap band and I know RNYers that don't dump and have had issues.  I am so happy to say that I made the right choice for me and have had no issues and I'm 11 months out.  I don't know alot about the sleeve so I cannot comment on that but I am sure there are wonderful folks who have had tremendous success with that surgery as well.

I urge you to talk to your health care provider who has been treating you for years and knows your medical history and get their input too.

I know in the end, you will make the best choice for you and I know you will do great.

Thank you so much for your information about your surgery. I would love to take your advice, but I do not know my health care provider. I only met him one time for a physical and then emailed him twice to get the referral to bariactics and that has been my whole  relationship with him. To be honest I switched insurances in April this year and had a physical in I believe July or so and asked for the refferal in late August and here I am.
I did speak to my surgeon yesturday, but he really could not recommend a certain one and really did not help me in trying to figure out which would be best for me.
Again thank you for responding.

Hello I wanted to add my thoughts only cause I am Pre Op and awaiting my surgery.

I picked the Sleeve and my reason for that was I have Endometriosis, and from time to time I have to take some heavy duty meds. I know with the RnY I cant take them, but with the sleeve I can.

Lap Band personally was not for me, I didnt want something I had to have fills and unfills. I wanted a permenint change to my eatting.

My other reason for Sleeve v.s. RnY is that I am a volume eater, I just eat to damn much of everything but sweets ( dont get me wrong I eat enough of them also) but after a 4 month test of seeing if I could stay away from sugars and soda I did. I only had one of each since June and I didnt care for them any more. I figured I didn't need the dumping syndrome of the RnY.

It took me a good five months before I figured out the surgery I wanted. I wish you the best of luck on picking and then working your new tool.

Katrina.

God bless our troops

Hey there! My personal choice was VSG. I was considered a lightweight going in starting at 201 but made goal within 8.5 months. I have maintained my weight (even lost an additional 5 pounds past goal) since September. There are many pros and some cons to every type of surgery so I recommned research, research, and more research!
Good luck with your journey!

Thanks for your input on the sleeve. I am really considering it. I really like the fact that I will still be able to take meds and also not having to worry so much about malabsorbtion problems. Yes I am going to try to research as much as possible. I actually was hoping I would hear from more people. I am really interested in the "why," people chose which surgery and if it in fact worked out in their favor. Or those who are awaiting surgery.........

Hi there....You might wanna post your question to each of the WLS forums that you are considering.  Ask for the "Vets" to respond seeing as you'd like to hear from folks 2yrs. otr more out...

I'm kinda an oddball "vet", as I've been here for 3yrs. and am in a few months going to have the VSG.  I 1st looked at the Lapband, but once I found the VSG, I was sold....

You look really young from your avatar, and on that, I'd say a simpler WLS like the VSG with no malabsorption (lookin at future pregnancies) might be a way to go...

Prob. reading on the forums of different surgeries will give you an idea of the issues/satisfaction people are experiencing...

Hope this helps...
