Sugar Free Foods??? SF Candy??

Hi all,

The only sugar free foods my nutritionist has recommended are jellos, popscicles, jam, and maybe a couple of other things I am not thinking of right now. Oh, yeah, splenda too.

What about things like SF chocolate and candy? I know those items have fat and calories, but have people used those items to stop a chocolate craving or other sort of sweet craving. I also will get a shot of SF vanilla syrup in my decaf coffee.

My program really doesn't speak to these foods at all. They don't forbid them or mention them.

Any insights would be appreciated.

I drink CLICK protein... mocha flavor... cheapest at Amazon. You can also buy a bottle of Torani SF Chocolate syrup and add it to your coffee etc... cheapest at WinCo.

I can tolerate sugar now... small tootsie rolls... SF Fudge Pops are always good... you don't want to know what I had during the holidays... but I made sure I maintained my weight... so all is good!

Hi there MsB.

On our trip to Apple Hill in Oct, I bought some sugar free candy (carmels and choc covered peanuts) and got some Apple Butter made with Splenda which was all really yummy did the trick to just satiate me.  I also bought some Russell Stover sugar free choc and have one occasionally.  I don't feel the need to eat them all the time, but over the holidays they were satisfying the urge for chocolate.

As you said they do have calories, so they can add up quickly but I think for a special occasion they are handy to have.

Hope to see you on the 23rd.

Hugs,
Barb

HI MsBlues,

What I like for a chocolate craving is the chocolate covered edamame from Trader Joe's. There are in the freezer section, where they keep all of there chocolate covered nuts/fruit ect.... They are covered in dark chocolate. Someone mentioned them in the support group, and I thought they were crazy, but they are really good. I for some reason prefer dark chocolate to milk since I had surgery, which is weird. Before surgery, it was the other way around. They are also good in protein, which is a nice plus. Hope this helps. They do have sugar in them, 13g per serving, which is a 1/4 cup.

Hugs Eileen

hi there
I, too, tolerate SF candy...as long as it is only 1-3 pieces at a time and only occassionly.  As Barb states, there is a ton of calories ( I cound at least 100cal per bite-size piece).  What I did want to mention, since no one else has brought it up yet, SF candy can cause Constipation!!  Big Time!  I have found if Montitrol (or however you spell it) is the 'surgar-substitute' listed (and it is usually listed first in the ingredients), I have to be super careful with the rest of my food that day as constipation becomes a major issue...along with GAS.  I find that as long as I really up my water intake (well between decaf and water) for that day, constipation is somewhat taken care of, but the gas can be an issue.

Of course, I add the usual 'disclaimer' here....this is MY experience! LOL
Good Luck...after all, we do need to be realistic and we are all learning the tricks to make this journey a Life Long one ^_^

Just keep in mind that just because it says "sugar free" doesn't mean it doesn't contain sugar alcohols.  I am very sensitive to sugars and sugar alcohols.  Just read your lables.
