Pre-OP

Okay so I went for a consult and then we set a date to see the surgeon and they said the day I meet him I need to set a Surgery date... Everything is falling in place so fast. But the thing is they gave me a list of what to do for excercise to loose 30lbs before surgery and what to drink. The nutritionist/dietition gave me another list of what to drink, on the list is says dont start till i get a surgery date, but they said I need to start the diet now! I want to know is there a reason my friends who have had the surgery tell me not to start it now? I want to follow my medical teams orders, but can the Drinks and what not destroy my body? Here is an example of what they said to drink for my meals...

100% Any Whey Protien (Unflavored)
1/4 Cup Bananas
Non-Fat Milk
(Blend drink)

or
SlimFast Low Carb Diet

I have to take in up to 140gm protien per day no more than 30gm a meal. And then 64oz of fluid on top. I just want to make sure I am doing whats right. I plan on following their orders (also calling monday) to the T. I just feel weird.

And my family said that all of this is a test to see if i really need surgery...but im 190 lbs over weight.... Could this be true? Do they really do that to people?

I am not sure why they wouldn't want you to start this regimen right away. Most programs won't give you a date until you've lost some weight before surgery. Your program seems to be to wait until you have a date to start losing weight. That is odd. I'd call back and ask if that's what they really want and why you can't start the nutritional regimen now.

It's always good to go back and ask your medical team questions. While many of us on this board have gone through this experience, each medical center that does Weight Loss Surgery have a particular system in place.  It's best to follow their system, but it's also good you're getting information from different sources.

Call Dr Owens and make sure you heard right.  The main reason that they want people to lose weight before surgery is losing any weight decreases the size of your liver.  The smaller your liver is the easier the surgery is for the surgeon.  I thing that there is work that needs to be done in the area of the liver so that is the reason that you have to lose a few.  More that likely you have a fatty liver, most of us do and that is the reason for it.

Thank you both! I really was explained why they wanted me to start right away... I told my friend and she said that it could hurt me. But im so lost. I am calling in the am to make sure, I am going to go get what I need for this journey period. But i am going to go ask them what I need to do.

They showed me this canned drink that they said go get at cost co but I forgot what it looks like and I typed the names of the products they said get, in costco search bar and its coming up with nothing.
