Anesthesia?

Just a quick question that's been bugging me - and I'm going to ask the P.A. about it @ my next appt.

I have a fear of that little mask they use when "nocking you out" - bad experience with my back surgery where I felt like they were suffocating me. My question is; Can I request they make me groggy before putting the mask on me? Or some kind of anti-anxiety med right before? Either way I'll go through with it, I just hate that 5 seconds that seems like eternity of "ack I can't breathe!!"

I'm off to school - I'll check back and reply after 12pm =D

Yes you can and they should do it. Just explain the cir****tances. That is pretty routine.

Absolutely, they can put it in your IV and you'll be feeling great!  I am asthmatic and I can totally understand.

I don't even remember a mask from my surgery.  One second I felt completely awake, and the next I was out like a light when they injected something into my IV. I am pretty sure they can knock you out without using a mask.

The groggy part is kind fun!

Just ask for Versed.  It is a wonderful little drug that knocks out your short term memory so you will not remember the mask.  I have had 8 surgeries in the last 6 years and do not remember anything beyond the nurse coming to the pre-op area with the wheel chair to take me to the OR.  I had a similiar experience when I had my tonsils out when I was 27 and explained it to the anethesioligist when I had my gastric bypass and he gave me versed for the first time.  It works great.

Sweet! Thanks guys, you really did calm my nerves! LOL Once I remembered that they would be using anesthesia I immediately thought . "oh no" and started getting that flash back feeling.  ^_^ I'll be okay now till I come up with another worry xD.

I'm 1/2 done with my required diet for insurance. 3 more months then sending for approval. My insurance usually takes 2-3 weeks with this doc..I'm getting excited already!!

I don't remember anything after the IV insertion. That was a little chore since I was dehydrated and it took a few people to get it in. Not really unpleasant though. You can certainly tell them about your anxiety when you check in and they will give you something to help you relax.

Best of luck on your journey. This is the beginning...
