CA SDI Question

The last time I was out on "disability" CA SDI kicked in as soon as I was in the hospital without having to complete the 7 day waiting period. I'm looking up the forms and rules this time and there is no mention of this. It's just the straight 7 day waiting period.

When did this change?

I wish I knew the answer to this, but I am sorry I don't. I hope you are able to find the answer(s) you are looking for.

I do not know when it changed. I had a waiting period in 2004 and 2007. It seemed harder to STOP it in 2007/2008 ~ LOL.

About  five - seven years ago, when the fund was running low, they made that change.  But at the same time, they increased the benefits.  Huh????  That's the state for ya!!

Well that explains it. I was last in the hospital 10 years ago. (Having my last kid.)

This is annoying to me because I only have 3 sick days saved up.

All 3 times I have been out on disability, I've had to deal with the waiting period.   The first time was 4 years ago.

In my case, payment did not start until the 7 day grace period.

Last time, were you in an acute care situation, like sent to the hospital in an emergency?  Maybe it has to do with the WLS, and in my case my 2 c-sections, being "planned".

Hmm. OK.

I specifically remember having my Csection almost 18 years ago and having a grace period.

DH had 7 day grace period when he had foot surgery WAY back in 1986! I remember because of how we had to scramble to come up with some $$ before the checks started to come, and how small that first check was.

I wish we had the old rules. We got screwed! :(

I had gallbladder in 1989, c-section in 1991 and another in 1998. Yeah, my torso if full of surgery graffiti.

In all of those the grace period was waived as soon as I was admitted to the hospital. Though, for the 1991 one, I had already been off work for almost two weeks so the grace period had already kicked in and it didn't matter.

Don't know what happened to you. It was even on the forms I filled out (and isn't on them any more). Maybe they didn't have one, then had one, then stopped again?

But the checks were definitely small and took forever to come either way. I'm lucky that my work will top up to 60% of my pay because the 55% of pay that CA SDI does tops out before it really is 55% of my pay.
