The choice of surgery is totally up to you. You must research all the options out there and decide what kind of lifestyle you want to live. I'm in the appeals process with my insurance company for the DS. The first part of the DS is the VSG, which provides restriction, the second part is the DS (duodenal switch) which provides malabsorption. The malabsorption offered with the DS helps with patients being able to maintain their weightloss. I've already been approved for the RNY but do not want to live the rest of my life on a diet. Diets have not worked for me in the past and I know that I would not be successful on a low calorie/ low carb diet. With the DS you eat proteins first, fats are not limited, and you can have sugar if you want but it will slow your weightloss down in your "weight loss window". I like the freedom of food choices that the DS offers. With the DS you have no man made pouch or stoma so there is no dumping. Since you don't have a blind stomach you don't have to worry about taking NSAIDS.You have to take vitamins/ supplements with whichever surgery you choose, just moreso with the DS. I think that's a small tradeoff for better quality of life. There are pros and cons to every surgery. PS make sure you go to a surgeon who performs all the surgery types out there so you don't get a biased opionion. There are not alot of DS surgeons . If you go to a surgeon who only offers the band or RNY then that's what they're gonna tell you need. Best of luck. Check out the DS board everyone is very informative over there.
To add to that, there are a lot of surgeons who say they do RnY and Band and Sleeve but 90% of their practice is RnY and they try to talk everyone who comes through their door into RnY. (There are some who are like this for the band, too, but not as many.)
If you are trying to decide which surgery is right for you, you want to talk to a surgeon who is objective about them all and won't misrepresent all but their favorite.
