I'm sure many of you have heard that Mervyns had filed for bankruptcy awhile back.  Many thought they would come out of bankruptcy and start over again...like K-Mart.  They have decided to close all their stores.  It doesn't matter much to me except for one thing.  Mervyns was always a great place to get my wife a anniversary, birthday, or Christmas gift.  For a typical guy with no fashion sense or who can be insensitive at times...Mervyns was a safe bet for clothes or jewelry.  J C Penny here I come...I guess.  Brian

Mervyn's LLC announced Friday that it will cease operations and hold going out of business sales at all of its stores, making the bankrupt retailer the latest company to succumb to an economy that has deteriorated steadily in recent months.

Hayward-based Mervyn's explored a sale of the company and a wide array of other options before making the abrupt decision to shut the company.

The going-out-of-business sales will be held during the upcoming holiday season, Mervyn's said.

"We are disappointed with this outcome" said John Goodman, chief executive officer of Mervyn's. "But the company's declining liquidity position and the extremely challenging retail environment, together with the fact that we have exhausted all other possibilities, requires that we take this action."

Mervyn's had filed for Chapter 11 earlier this year and was attempting to reorganize its finances through the bankruptcy case.

Wow, that means that the BRAND NEW Mervys that opened up near me will close before it's been open more than about 4 months.

Just a word of caution about JC Penny. As far as for their jewelry don't buy anything containing diamonds. They buy cloudy and cheap crap and try to sell it for more than its worth. I know this first hand when my hubby and I went looking for diamond stud earings 3 yrs ago.

So my daughter is in about 6th grade years ago.  She wants to get her ears pierced.  I tell my wife to take her to J C Pennys...they know what they're doing for stuff like ear piercing.  My other daughter (who is in the 4th grade at thetime) comes along. The machine gets stuck in her ear!!  The employee can't get the thing out of her ear.  After a few minutes the machine retracts and lets go of her ear.  My other daughter was so traumatized by the incident she did not have her ears pierced till she was 17.  Brian

Many pediatrician's offices do ear piercing. My daughter's didn't but I took her to my PCP's dermatology office and had her piercing done there. It was clean, safe and she was not traumatized. My DH would not let me get her ears pierced at a retail outlet.
