Ok, I'm in...
Or at least start the process... I've been researching surgery types for nearly a year, discussing outcomes with a few WLS patients (which vary widely, sheesh...), and even attended an OH event here in L.A.
But now that I've made up my mind that this is the appropriate course of action to take for me, I suddenly feel lost. I think I'm suffering from information overload and now fear sabotaging my goal by doing something/anything in the process incorrectly. Especially since I don't have any of the serious "co-morbids" (hypertension, diabetes, etc.) I'm hoping my 50+ BMI and backache is enough.
So far, I've called and made the appointment with my new PCP (job just changed insurance companies) for a physical and assessment. I've got Anthem BC (Axminster Medical Group.)
I've always been impressed with the interaction on this site. Any advice is welcome.

Research surgeons. Ask around and find one in your area from people who have the least complications. It speaks volumes about the surgeon.
Write a letter and document your "medical necessity" and give it to your doctor, the medical group and your insurance company now (MIne is on the top of my blog) your 6 months (if its required) starts the minute you mail it. Send it certified mail! Get weighed at least every 29 days. Dont go 30 days so they can come back and say you missed one and have to start the 6 months again.
Stay on top of your doctor and your surgeon. Dont take any excuses from your doctor. They may try to stall in hopes you will give up. Dont. Document every phone call w/ names of who you talked to and the date and time.
It will be the best decision of your life! I would do it again in a heartbeat!
Having this surgery is the best thing I have ever done. If you are not in a local support group find one now. They can really be helpfull in getting you to a good surgeon (VERY important). Your support group is a welth of information. I have been going to mine even before my surgery and still learn new things every time I go.
Take care,

Hi Nancy,
I belong to a support group. It meets every 2nd Monday of the month in Pasadena. It is for Pacific Bariatrics , but anyone can come and reap the benefits. The group leader's name is Nancy. I went to support group for about 3 months before surgery, and continue to go now.
When we talked at the OH event, you were at odds with what you were going to do and how you felt about people having weight loss surgery. Please clear up those issues before you go any further (support group or a counselor). I am here for you (you know we go way back). I am one of the opinionated people you talked you, LOL. You won't mess anything up. Have you checked out your insurance here on OH (to see how and if they approve wls)? Somewhere on this website, there is a standard letter that you can write to your doctor and the insurance company regarding why you need wls (of course you would have to taylor it to suit your needs).
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me directly or post here on the boards.
Take it easy and good luck.
Kim
Yes, I've finally decided to jump in with both feet and I'm definitely interested in attending the support group meetings.
When we spoke, I was in my final "soul searching" stage. Up until the OH event, I'd run into a few patients who'd changed their bodies, but not the mindset. This I saw as "cheating" and I wanted to be certain that my decision was based on sound research and a willingness to change my habits and not merely a quest for a thong bikini.

I am very grateful for your insight and others that I met at the OH event. It allowed me to step away and review my motivations/goals and I'm satisfied that I'm making an informed decision for the right reasons.
Thanks again,
NIT
