Observations About Food

I don't know if this is just me, maybe its common amongst post-ops, but I've noticed a few things lately.

Does anyone else have a heightened sense of taste as a post-op?  I can taste everything in my food. I don't know if its' because I eat slower now.  Since I can can only a little bit now, I know that my choice in food has become a bit fancier. I want to eat something really good if I'm going to eat.   I can figure out what ingredients are in my food and I'm also really aware of how much salt is in processed foods....it's usually too much for me.

My palatte has become highly sensitive. If I go out for a drinky, I can take a sip let it sit in my mouth for a while and notice all the subtle flavors....same thing when I drink coffee or tea. I can appreciate the subtle differences between brews. It's almost become a game, my friend will give me something he ordered and wants me to tell him what's in it. :)

also...

My family told me what's on the menu for tonight. Just hearing about how much food was on the menu grossed me out. I'm thinking about bringing a protein shake with me tonight. If I go to a buffet or salad bar looking at a lot of food doesn't bother me...BUT looking at food piled on a person's plate: gross!.

What about you?

My sense of taste has always been very sensitive but even more so now. What shocks me is watching people eat when I go out. OMG!!! It is huge mouthfuls that they chew 3-4 times and swallow. They never taste the food. I have always been one to chew my food more than the norm because it would gets "stuck" if I didn't. The amount of food that is served has always amazed me. I hear people say, Oh yeah it's a great place to eat, they give you a lot of food!" People don't care so much as to what it taste like just so long as there is a lot of it!
My Mom is a retired Chef so I understand those subtle tastes and Yes, I am more aware now than ever.
This is a great postMonica and I am glad you have put it up. I really hope others reply, I would like to see what others think too.

I do notice all the subtle flavors now.  I also notice that I am going for the "higher grade" foods rather than just the regular.  Fast food - not a chance in hell.  That's not food!

I appreciate each and every bite I choose to put in my mouth!  I discriminate and only choose high quality palate pleasing bites.  I realize now I enjoy my meals a lot more than I used to.  Choosing carefully what I am eating and being more aware of it lets me enjoy my choices.

Thanks for such a thoughtful post Monica!  I sure hope Santa is awsome to you!

Good thread Monica.  A few things come to mind.  I don't eat hardly any candy post op.  I don't like anything with corn syrup in it.  I really enjoy dark chocolate (one of my downfalls).  Deep fried foods I can not stand!  I can taste the grease.  Before with candy or KFC, I would just force it down...Now it really matters how it tastes.  Brian  PS  I can not stand cheap coffee.  I now want good coffee or I'll just pass on it.

Ha! I'm the same way with coffee! I don't drink the generic stuff at work, I make it a treat to stop at my favorite spot on the way to work where I can get some fancy Italian roast diluted with some decaf though...or else my tummy hurts.

It has to be really good coffee or none at all. Folgers is dish water to me.

Ah life post op and taste buds Monica....weird stuff eh? I have always said I would rather have a few bites of something really really good than to just have mediocraty!

My taste buds are sensitive for sure even this far out....it is a good thing. I do not eat when I am wandering around thinking of something that will delight my taste buds either. Highly dangerous terrritory for me. I know one thing that I do post wls is I eat much spicer food too. Where as prior to WLS OMG I did not hardly touch the stuff.

Favorite cusine since wls...Mexican food...is it not just the bomb? I am not talking generic Mexican food either...I mean the real good stuff! Chili verde....knock me over in a vat and let me eat my way out....okay a couple of bites....and could eat the sauce like soup! No tortillas....and oh how I miss....tamales!

You know I teach in a primarily hispanic community...and those moma's would bring me hoards of tamales....no more...and as much as I miss them...no way!

You are very aware Monica...those people you watch heap the food use to be us....I sometimes sit and wonder how I ever did it....just think NO food hangovers now! YIPPIE!!!

I hope you are having a good holiday season!!!!
