What I keep in my car...and hospital food...

I am reposting this from what I wrote on the Main Board.  Thought it might be a good thread...concerning what food you keep in your car and about hospital food.
Ever since I started out on my WLS journey I always try to keep different foods in my car.  The two main reasons for this is if I am stuck in the middle of nowhere, I can have the food I need available.  The other is if I ended up in the hospital, I know I will have the right food there (please do not assume the staff in the hospital knows anything about WLS and your dietary needs).  You must be proactive in this area concerning the hospital.

I keep different nuts (small amounts of walnuts, almonds, dry roasted peanuts, roasted soy nuts, beef jerkey, and Cheerios.  I also keep a can of vegetable beef soup there and my favorite protein bar (Rockin Roll...GNC).  In the summer much of this will not keep, but during the rest of the year it is a security blanket for me.  So what's in your car??
Brian   PS  Don't assume the hospital will have the right vitamins either...

I have been admitted 3 times to a hospital (post WLS).  During these times my wife would bring in my "special food".  The nurses knew about it.  I would order the best food in the hospital I could find...then keep it for 2 or 3 meals (hoard it).  I would make sure the staff wouldn't take it away (unless it was going bad).  Just me.  Chicken breast or baked fish was like gold vs things like a ham sandwich (which was mostly bread).  Just keep it in the back of your mind if you have to go in post op.  We are coming to them, ready or not, as the years pass...Just be ready.   Brian

I keep several Isopure Zero Carb RTD, a few protien bars, a few bottles of water and usually have a week's worth of vitamins in my purse.  We live in the boonies where being prepared is a good thing.  Good thread!

Ok here is a tip if you get stuck in the hospital for more then a day. ASK for a nutritionist consult.  Most hospitals have them on staff and they can arrange meals to accomadate your needs.  Well, least most the hospitals I worked for.  It might take a day for the stuff to come through, but most hospitals want good reviews and do their best to accomadate patients.

Also ask what kind of diet was ordered for you, and whether there is a WLS diet available, and be pushy.  Do this when you first get there, when the nurse is taking your history, and at every meal that seems wrong.  Yeah, you will get the rep as the demanding pt, but in the end its your health.  And once your diet is fixed, make sure that everyone knows how much you appreciate it.
Oh, and if you are calling the nurse, ask all your questions at once. Don't call us every 5 minutes.  We do have other patients :p

I don't keep anything in my car. I do keep beef jerky and a protein bar in my purse though.

I don't go to a support group yet.  My surgery date is on the 13th of Jan.  Can you go to the support group any time.

Yes! I found it very helpful. The first hour is for pre-ops and the second for post-ops. When I was a pre-op, I went to the whole thing. Now that I'm a post-op, I come a bit later but still try to attend part of the pre-op part because pre-ops want to hear from post-ops and not just the doctor.
