I am so frustrated..........Only 4 pounds

I am so frustrated and at my wits end with this. I started well before Thanksgiving on this quest to lose only 10 pounds for this surgery per the doctors request. I have eliminated all the diet soda, breads, large meals, I even replaced breakfast and lunch with protein drinks.

On the first weigh in visit I gained 5 stinking pounds how is that possible. I went out and bought an exercise bike and a couple weeks late I got a treadmill (evil thing) and I use these to things everyday for the past 3 or 4 weeks, I didnt have a big meal at Xmas for the family get together and I only lose 4 pounds..........Whats up with that???

So now I have 11 pounds to go and dont know what to do except go on a liquid diet but the nutritionist at the doctor said "You dont want your body to go into starvation mode"........I just dont know what to do..

Thanks for letting me vent

Have a great day

I am really sorry you are so frustrated...

Are you calculating what you are eating in a food journal??  Maybe that will be helpful for you..
I am on a 1000 cal diet, and I too cut out sodas.. (but have had some carbs)  I have upped my exercise and calculate EVERYTHING I eat, even if I cheated and ate a miniature snack size candy bar..  It really helps to look at what you are doing... Maybe you can see a pattern of where you are going wrong..  Give it a try if you are not doing so, and maybe this will help..

Up the exercise.. I know working out is not the greatest thing to do, but look at the prize that is on the other side..  A HEALTHIER YOU!!   Use your frustration to motivate you on the treadmill, or on your exercise bike..

You can do this.. DO NOT GIVE UP..  I have faith in you...

Damn.....all I can think is that you have gained muscle and that is where the extra weight came from....You shouldnt go into starvation mode...maybe the meal replacement drinks have too many calories....did the dietician give you a pre-surgical diet to follow..mine did and I lost 17 pounds on it...if you want I can email it to you...let me know....I will keep rootin for you though,
Dont get discouraged...stay positive (I know its hard) good things will come...

I think maybe you have gained some muscle, which would definitely affect your weight loss.

Also, how much water are you getting in every day? The heavier we are the more we need, the adage "64 oz a day" just doesn't cut it for us, and if you are not getting in adequate water it can slow your weight loss WAY down.

Definitely get a food tracker going (I use www.thedailyplate.com) and be BRUTALLY honest about everything that goes into your mouth.

You can do this! It took you a long time to get to the weight you are at now, it's gonna take you a while to "recover" from it!

Do not give up!

HI THERE,
I kind of laughed when I read your messaged (sorry) but it's because I know exactly what your going through and feeling.  I felt the same way. I tried soooo hard to just lose 5lbs and my Dr. would have been happy, so I stepped out of my safety zone and joined swimming arobics with a bunch of other over weight people that had medical problems just like me. Thank God I did because I had a hard time correcting my eating. I ended up losing 5lbs in three month of swimming. My membership ended and, because I was waiting for a surgery date soon I didn't renew it. Thought I would wait till after surgery. During my 2 week wait I gained 4lbs back. Oh my gosh, after all that work!  My Dr. wasn't thrilled but went ahead and did it anyway. The surgery definitely is teaching me how to eat and how not to over eat. My tummy tells me.
Keep trying one day at a time.
Good Luck,
njo

Rick..I am so sorry for the setback...it will resolve itself, just might be a bit longer.
When you eat, as you've read..record everything.
I found, as a diabetic, that the order in which I ate controlled my blood sugar and helped me metabolize food better.  As in post-op eating...Protein first!!  Since you are working out, eat  3-5 oz. of a good, lowfat source of protein. (Animal or vegitarian)  Next, a healthy serving of a low Glycemic Index vegetable or complex carb. You need to eat  4-5 mini-meals and a snack or two.  You want to save muscle but burn fat...that can happen with a higher protein, low simple carb eating regime. ..and watch those added fats..they sneak in..lol
Nothing white must cross your lips!!..lol  (FF milk/dairy is ok..lol)
Colorful foods!!..lol
A good snack to kill the appetite is a small handfull of RAW almonds..good omega fats, good protein and fiber.  They are my life saver in a pinch.
When is your next visit??  You can do this..you have a strong will and a terrific support family here on OH.
Best wishes..

Thank you everyone for the GREAT support. I am by no means going to give up.........Its not in my blood. I am just a little frustrated is all.

I am getting a little confused on what I should eat now. There are several great suggestions mentioned here and I am going to try and put them in a meal plan. I would like to see a copy of a Pre-Op diet that some people have mentioned and maybe modify it a bit.

A couple people have offered to help and I have taken them up on the offer. A few months ago a friend asked I would help her and several of her friends to come up with a food and exercise journal and which I did and still have several copies left. They are good for 30 days at a wack and are designed to take to your doctor and show him or her exactly what you are eating and doing for excercise.

Have a great day

Rick,

I would certainly recommend the journaling and weighing and measuring what your intake is.  I know myself, that what I "think" is 4 oz, is more likely to be 6oz.  Same with measuring.  What I "think" is a 1/2 cup is more like 3/4 cup.  My eyes deceive me LOL.

Don't give up, you will do this and you will be rewarded handsomely.

I had surgery when I weighed about 430lbs but every doctor is different.  The only think I recommend is do cardio...cardio...cardio workouts and shed as much fatty foods.  Stick with high protein food..chicken, cold cut meats, protein shakes, etc.  Fill up on veggies and drink lots of H2O!

Good luck and hang in there...You'll be next on the loser's bench!

I had to go the preop diet with Dr. Suh also. What protein drinks are you using? What are you mixing your protein drinks with? Use water. Milk adds calories!  Dont add fruit as it adds calories. The preop diet is to shrink the liver and to get you used to thinking about what your eatting so the postop transition is easier.  Dr. Suh is fantastic!  I interviewed alot of surgeons. You made a great choice. Do you have a surgery date?
