This Stuff Would Gag A Goat

Cali friends,

I need some advice from my experienced friends...

Did anyone have to crush their meds, i.e. metformin, diovan (diabetes and blood pressure respectively) and try to mix it up with something and try to get it down?

They tried to give me this is the hospital but I think I dumped on it (nausea cold sweat, felt like cr_p).  They used a pill crusher and tried to put it in juice, but it made me sick it was so bitter.

Help or advice really appreciated.  Other than that, no problems getting chewable vitamins down, or water or anything else for that matter, just takin' it show.

Thanks,
Barb

talk to your doctor and see if it comes in liquid or chewable forms. What are you mixing it with?  Most do applesauce.

Hey Barb,
I did not have to do this, but maybe a wee bit of applesauce would help. It is a little better tasting than juice.
I hope it gets better for you.

I couldn't do it and ended up cutting them (thyroid and paxil) into tiny pieces and taking them slowly with water.  It took a while, but didn't make me barf.

Hang in there

On another note, you need to check with your pharmacy and make sure that these pills are ok to crush. Some are not.....better to be safe than sorry....

Hi all,

I checked with the pharmacist, and she said they don't come in chewable and can be crushed.  She admitted they are very bitter.

I will give my primary care doc a call tomorrow and see if I can d/c them.  I will keep testing them but so far the metformin is absolutely the worst and that's for blood sugar control.  The others so far I might be able to handle.

Thanks for your help.

Hey, I just made mine smaller and took them, but after two weeks, make sure you keep checking your sugar level, I had to get off of the diabetes meds because it was gone, and still is.  Just cut them smaller and take it with sips of water, and be sure to continually check that sugar level and let your doctor know when it starts to get low!

Glad you are doing better.

If you crush your pills you can mix them in almost anything.  If the applesauce makes you dump, try cottage cheese or SF Pudding.  Basically any slider type food will do. (I have even disquised it in ice cream for some of my more resistant patients).  Juice is very high sugar, so I would not be surprised if you dumped.  Another problem is that "liquid" forms of meds are often high sugar to help hide the taste.  (Valsartan does come as a suspension, not sure about metformin)

Good luck,
Carol

Carol,

I am not supposed to have applesauce yet.  Right now their recommendations are,

milk (fat free or non-fat)
blended soups
ff pudding
no sugar added instant breakfast
lite protein drinks
lf cottage cheese

Thanks for letting me know about the Valsartan though.
