How will I ever do what the Doctor wants????????
Hello everyone-
I had RNY in June of 2006. I just had hernia repair/tummy tuck on December 30th. My pre-op labs showed I was at the very lowest point of normal for my protein. This is not where I want to be hanging out. My doctor was not happy at all and told me that I need to have 80-100gms of supplemental protein in addition to the foods I eat. How am I ever going to do this? I will either just have all supplements and no food or if I do both supplements and food I will probably gain weight from too many calories? What am I supposed to do? Has anyone had this problem? I could sure use some advise.
What I was doing was having a 30gm shake every morning and then eating high protein the rest of the day. I know this is nothing to mess around with.
Thanks, Michelle

Hey Michelle, are you sure he said 80-100gms protein in addition to your food?? Could it be that he meant that as total protein per day?? I would think that much protein would be hard on the kidneys and lead to Proteinuria (high protein in urine). I would double check with your doc to make sure. Wishing you much luck and congrats on the tummy tuck! =)

Uh, do you know that for a fact, Katt? Proteinuria is the spilling of protein from the bloodstream, and PROTEIN is not absorbed from the digestive tract, amino acids are. Excess protein intake results in weight gain from the storage of energy provided by the carbon, hydrogen and oxygen portions of the amino acids, and can cause stress to the kidneys by the need to excrete excess nitrogen in the form of uric acid. Excess protein intake can exacerbate gout as well.
Kat,
I do 120 grams supplemented a day with shakes. I use O carb and basically 0 calories. Supplemented protein shakes that are pre-digested whey do not hurt the kidney as they do not go thru the digestive track, These goes straight to the blood system and then dispursed with where they are neede.
I will do protein shakes for as long as I live.

According to at least one study, people can safely have 2.8 g of protein per kg of body weight a day. That's a lot of protein!
But the kidney stones that the OP mentioned can be a side-effect if you eat a lot of protein and don't drink enough water. (Even if you aren't getting anywhere near the max.) There is a pill you can take to help prevent them forming though. My next-door neighbor, who had RnY, takes it.
