I do take a pill for the kidney stones. It is called Urocit-K. It is a form of potassium. I originally started taking potassium after RNY when they found I was low. Once they discovered the stones (Which had to be forming for quite a while before RNY by the size of them) I was switched to the Urocit-K. I still have a huge stone in my right kidney but it is staying put and not growing any bigger. So I guess it helps.

That is good to know about the protein per kg. Now I just have to do the matha and see where I sit.

So that means low potassium could contribute to kidney stones?! Well, that explains a lot about my little ER trip.

If I never pass a kidney stone again, it will be too soon!

I am almost 6 months post op and I still do a protein drink daily and I work out 5 to 6 days a week.  I also get in over 100 grams of protein most days.  My protein drink is 40 grams of protein and the rest of my protien comes from high protein foods (greek yogurt, salmon, shrimp, beef jerky, nonfat milk, cheese).
If you are worried about gaining weight I would increase your exercise to off-set the extra calories you are worried about.  Your body needs protein.

Protein loss may not show up for years. My labs were always really good up until now. I was the one that always got comments that my labs were so good they looked like I was a lapband patient. Now 2.5 years out I am having a problem. My vitamin D is below normal too so I had to started taking extra D in addition to the D that is in my calcium and multi vites. I guess our bodies are always changing and our needs will change.

I take a protein shake for breakfast and dinner with 1.5 scoops of protein powder.  With JayRobb protein powder that's 37g protein & 165 calories in the morning and 37g and 165 calories at night.  Then I eat a regular meal at lunch (usually 15-18g protein).  Some days I have an ISOPURE pinapple orange banana which is another 40g protein & 160 calories.    Some days I have a protein bar.  I'm still losing. :-)   I shoot for 8--11g of protein a day.   I have upped my exercise though and you may need to as well.

Good luck and let us know how you work it out.

Thanks Jan. I think I am just freaking out. It seemed so overwhelming. I was always told I was doing so well and now this. So I think it threw me for a loop. After I recover from the tt I will get back on the excercise train.

Just wanted to show you some support and wish you luck with this... Let us know how you do, and if ever you have any concerns, always ask your Dr. to break things down on how he wants it to be done..

Good Luck Hun,
Jenn

When you are on a high protein low carb diet, you lose weight.  I was successful once with that, but my eating habits came back.  Anyway, keep the carbs low and just up the protein and I think you would be ok.  If you are really worried about the calories, then take more protein drinks, they are lower in calories or find that one that is.  Make them your snack, that might work.  Just keep the water flowing and you should be ok.  Just a thought!

Good luck, Diane

Thanks Diane. I usually use Unjury which is 100 calories per scoop for 20gm of protein. They did give me some Isopure in a bottle while I was in the hospital. They were fruit flavorsand pretty sweet and thick. But once I watered them down a little I could drink them pretty easy. They are 40gms of protein per bottle and 160 calories. No carbs or fat, plus they have a bit of calcium and potassium. I think they are about $4 a bottle though. Maybe a trip to the Vitamin Shoppe to check out products might help.
