WOOT, back from the Hospital....and I survived!

Hiya everyone, well I'm back from the hospital (got home yesterday afternoon).

Boy, I was totally not ready for all the pain.   I am a baby and my threshold for pain is very low.  I cried on that second day wondering what  in the hell I did to myself.  Did anyone else have this reaction, where they were afraid they did the wrong thing as your laying there in the hospital feeling like you just got run over by a truck?  Fortunately my husband stayed with me both nights.   I was in a beautiful private room with a window and gorgeous view of the sun sets.  The first day after surgery wasn't too bad.  The second day I thought I was going to DIE.  I had so much gas and bloating and it's almost imposable for me to burp now.....I couldn't pass any gas until the next day.  I was so miserable and had a small panic attack.  My husband missed a couple of days of work and we probably won't be able to make our car payment this month....but I was SO glad he was able to stay with me.   I had one nurse who was a meanie and who didn't know too much, but my other nurses were great.  :O)

Well, I'm still not feeling totally well so I'm going to go back to my sipping water and juice and lay down.  I'll see y'all on the losers bench!!!

I'm glad you are back and ok!!!

Yes, I had horrible pain.  The morphine they gave me made me sick and I was in a LOT of pain and crying all the time, what a baby!

But they couldn't switch meds until the next AM when the Dr came and I tell you almost instantly, the new meds made me a new woman!  It was rough.  I sent Barry home too, didn't want him to see me like that and I knew he'd just annoy me probably, lol

Did they give you any pain killers to take home?  If not and you are in pain, get on the horn and get some.  They sent me home with liquid vicodin which worked wonders, really got me through the first few days.

I wish you well Sweetie, just take it easy!!

Hey there,

I had my rny on 1/16/08 and if you have any ?'s, I will be glad to help. Yes, they do put a tube in, but don't worry you are asleep and when you wake up, it's not there. You never feel a thing with the tube, just a scratchy throat the next day. Even though you want to stay in bed, my advice get up and walk. It will prevent blood clots and it makes you feel better. You make to walk, sip, walk, sip, fart, fart, walk & sip...lol

I wasn't awake, but I don't think the hose goes in your nose, I believe they put one down your throat and you don't know it.  They take it out long before you wake up and you will only have a sore throat and a dry throat.  Ask for a wet cloth when in recovery, you can wash off your life and I suck the life out of them for the water.  I didn't have much pain, of course I have had numerous previous surgeries so this pain was nothing in comparsion to some I have had.  When I came home, they sent pain meds home, never took them, nor did I take anything in the hospital.  I actually pooed, slept and walked in the hospital.  The more you walk and move the better the gas problem. I never went back to bed when I came home.  I sat downstairs and walked around alot.  It is major surgery, being put to sleep take a toll on your body so don't rush anything.  You feel good, then walk, you're tired, then sleep, best advise for those entering surgery is LISTEN to you body and your doctors.

Good luck,

Diane

RNY on 01/23/08 with
Melissa:

Just take it easy on yourself and listen to your body.  Walk whenever you can to keep things moving and sip your water.  Other than that, rest and it will get better.  I have a very high pain tolerance and the first couple of days were still pretty painful for me.  It will get better though.

Congratulations!

I am a Dr. Suh patient also.   Congratualtions!
Tomorrow you will feel 100% better than you do today..and the next day...100% even better.  The bloaty achy feeling lasts a week or so..take meds as you need them..do not over medicate..it disrupts your ability to walk and get your fluids in...OH..take something for constipation BEFORE it sets in.  A stool softener 2 times a day is good....just some of those gel ones..or a liquid if you can find one.  I sipped baby prune juice.  You WILL be sleepy..listen to your body..rest, sip, walk, go potty..lol..thats ALL you need to worry about.
I did NOT have my husband there, I like to be miserable alone..lol  I was lucky though, besides the panic attack I had and got my Xanax for..I only needed some liquid Tylenol for pain.  I used the drug-pump at night to sleep.  But those leg air-cuffs...grrrrrr.
Anything they had tubed in me was either gone or taken out the next day..no pain from any of that stuff.
Be well and get well soon

Congrats on your surgery.  Just take it one day at a time and you will do fine.  Rest if tired, and walk around the house if you're not.  Do not over do this, only will make you worse.  Just sip your water, as much as you can, they do not expect you to flood yourself right after, but trust me everything will come in time.  Enjoy your time off and relax.

Best Wishes, Diane

Thanks everyone!!!
I'm still having trouble passing gas....geesh... but I've drank like 6 oz of prune juice so far today and I've had about 30 oz of water, some SF pudding and jello.  DH is bringing me home some chicken broth.  :O)

I DO NOT want to ever dump so I'll be leaving out all the sugar in my life from now on.  Dumping was the scariest part of this surgery but my insurance wouldn't cover a VSG or DS....  >:o(

They sent me home with liquid Hydrocorazone but I haven't taken it since Dr. Suh said it will make the gas worse tomorrow...  :O(

I'm really looking forward to feeling better and I've already lost 10 pounds WOOT!!!!!!!
