Has anyone applied for health insurance AFTER RNY?  We might shop around after my surgery (much later) , but I am wondering if it will be harder to get insurance after having the RNY?  Thanks!

A lot harder.  When you find an insurance company that will cover you, let me know because I couldn't get anyone to insure me.  As soon as I told them I was a gastric bypass person, the conversation was over.

Good luck and let me know.

If you are getting a private policy as opposed to being on a group plan, most insurance companies will reject you for having gastric bypass within 2 - 3 years of surgery.  A group plan, however, cannot turn you down for any reason.

A group plan is usually what is available in a work situation.  My firm is a "group" hence I had no problem getting on their plan.  Blue Cross had to accept me no matter what.

Same goes for you life insurance. If you already have a policy you cannot upgrade it for at least 3 years or more depending on the life insurance company. This is why I have to stick with my PPO and not go through HMO because everything for sure will be denied.GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

The insurance companies still do not think that the RNY is that safe. They think there are too many complications and that you could kick the bucket sooner. What a bunch of dopes eh? I am nearly 7 years out and I am healthier than I have ever been. My doctor said my labs are so good that it is like having money in the bank in terms of my longevity!

One day the insurance companies might just get it!!!

Makes no sense to me...the insurance companies are the ones that are paying for the RNY in the first place. Oh, duh, what was I thinking??...it is an insurance company.lol lol
