Checking in with a question

Aloha to all my friends here!!   Bless you for your good wishes and ALWAYS strong support.

I have been doing well and following the rules!  As a result I feel great and am down 50lbs!  I was a bit surprised to find that I never really "feel" hungry and I do have to be dilligent about getting in my meals, although water has never been a problem.  I'm taking my vitamins, iron and calcium. I'm taking Biotin and have since 1month out. So far (everyone knock on your desk!) no hair loss, although I know most of you said that seems to come at about the 3-4 mark which is where I am currently.   I know my loss would be substancially better if I got off my "butt" more, and I'm doing better with that, but I'm not a poster child for exercise thats for SURE.

Now I'm to my question.  How much protein can you take at one time?  (supplement)  I had a protein "bullet" that I loved the taste of and was drinking every day. Its 42grams in 3 oz.  I mix it with 3oz water and VOILA!  I thought I had half my intake for the day!  Now I'm hearing (and I won't believe it till I see it HERE) that you can only absorb 25-30 grams at time!!   What I can do is water it down and drink in two sittings, but if I don't have to I won't.   So what ya think community?

Thanks for the help!

Hi there . . . and great job you are doing!  I'm no expert at ALL . . .but I had heard we can absorb 50 grams . . . so that's what i've been working with.  My protein drinks are 30 . . . I'll be interested to see the answers here too.

I eat and drink a lot of protein a day...that's because I weight lift and exercise a whole lot.  It's true that we don't absorb all the protein we intake at once....I think that it's best you're increase protein a notch to make up for the other half you're not absorbing.

Hey there!  Your body can only absorb 30 grams of protein at one time (for females - males it is slightly higher) so it looks like you are gonna have to take it in two rounds.  Great job for asking the question.  I personally think that protein drinks are from hell.  I thought I was gonna die when I was newly post op and I HAD to drink them.  YUCK, YUCK, YUCK!!!!!

Now I get all my protein from foods and hope to God that I won't ever have to drink protein again.

If you worked out you could handle more protein and it would do some good. However, you say you don't do too well in that deptartment. I was under the understanding that it should be 25-30 grams X 3 times a day, so that is what I try to do.
Your doing a good job of working that tool.

Hi! The 'average' person absorbs around 30 grams at a time. We here on this board know we are above average people  So since we had a malabsorptive procedure, I'd guess we absorb less than average.

Remember, if you are going to split up your protien drink. Separate it before you start drinking it. You don't want -- ahem -- backwash to deplete minerals from your drink. Also, protien has to stay cold or it starts breaking down immediately, so refridgerate the part you will drink later.

And remember...protien first!

That's my 2 cents.

Nope, but you'll get there.  I'm almost 5 years out and still follow the same basic principle of "protein first" to ensure I get my daily intake.

30 grams is the standard that has been told to us for years, I use that as my guide. I do 120 grams supplemented with shakes per day. I have no idea how much is absorbed when I "eat" my protein, so what ever is absorbed there is a bonus.

During the period of hair loss or not wanting it I always suggest increasing your protein supplemenatation, hair is made of protein. The reason it starts at 3 months? well, our storehouses in our bodies can go 3 months, at that time if not supplemented with our vitamins, minerals, and proteins, we would deplete them, then you get your hair loss, grey ghost, and many other not so pleasant things.

Congrats on the weight loss.....

Thanks so much to all of you!  I KNEW I could get the answer and be done with the "what abouts..."   I could switch to the 25gram and drink it 3 times......I'll check it out

I know some of these taste WAY bad, but I like the taste of this one!   I also loved (that's kind of an understatement) AchieV One    I think its the caffeine that truly "hooked" me!

Both of these are not cheap, but when I compare my new costs with the costs of my groceries and junk food, I come up WAY better!   LOL
