Medi-cal question..
Hello, I was curious to what medi-cal would cover.. I currently live in oklahoma and was on soonercare untill I started recieving child support for my only child. A week after getting it, the state cut me off of insurance, but still cover my daughter..They say I get too much child support to qualify for state insurance. 625.00 is too much?? No I thought child support was for my child not for ME... Anyhow to make a long story short, while being covered by soonercare my doctor agreed that I need gastric bypass and was going to back me up.. I went on a diet and lost 17 lbs in 5 weeks with just taking my daughter to the pool and swimming all day.. I was happy and feeling better.Bad news came and I wasnt covered any longer so I gave up.. I have struggled with my weight for all my life.I am 29 now. My best friend lives in southern california and wants my daughter and I to move there so I can apply for medi-cal, she says more than likely I can get approved. I just want to know if they cover wls.. Does anyone know??? I am a single mom right now and currently not working.. Long story to why Im not..After giving birth to my daughter had major medical problems due to complications with my c-section..

How disappointing for you.
There are so many things that fly in California that don't fly in other states.
I don't have that type of insurance myself so i don't know, but I would suggest that you call MediCal here in this state and find out what makes one eligible. Or get on the internet and find out.
i think medi-cal does cover wls because one of my 'surgery buddies' had that type of insurance. She was about sixty years old, had diabetes, and was on disability. And she got approved for a rny. Then again, maybe she had other insurance. i don't know.
i wish you the best of luck.

This State DOES NOT have a state budget and until we have one and stop laying off police officers, teachers, probation officers, closing schools, medical facilties, and giving I.O.U.'s in taxes...I would say... stay were you are! There aren't jobs here, rent is very high in CA and the cost of living here is way more than you are living with in OK. There may not be medi-cal here at the rate we are going!!

What will Medi-Cal cover? They cover the LapBand provided you aren't super morbidly obese or larger, the RNY (open or lap) and the Duodenal Switch (open or lap).
I have Medi-Cal through Blue Cross Managed Care program and had an open Duodenal Switch September 26, 2008. Best thing I ever did! I wish I had known when I first got Medi-Cal that I could get WLS, because I never would've switched to a managed care program. I would've stayed on straight Medi-Cal because it's SO MUCH EASIER that way.
I should also say I wouldn't recommend moving to California. Our economy is the worst in the nation. And it wouldn't be easy to get benefits. It's hard for me to maintain mine even though I'm legitimately disabled.

HW 467 (82.7) / SW 345 (61.1) / CW 224 (39.6) / GW 150 (26.5) - last weigh in on 09/29/2009 - 121 pounds lost since surgery / 243 pounds lost from highest weight - Never settle. Period. Whatever it is, it's worth fighting for.
