The scale only go's to 350, and apparently, I'm over 350!!!! I'm barely eating and I'm averaging a gain of 10 pounds a month!!! i only have like 4 months before surgery to lose like 40 or 50 pounds, and i haven't been put on the liquid diet yet, but still. The way my body is acting I'm afraid even with RNY i wont be able to lose! Oh and to top it all off, now that i finally have a chance to be approved by my insurance for RNY, my doctor and my RNY surgeon think i have a rare brain tumor found in overweight patients, and it can cause blindness, everyday my vision gets worse! I'm 18 years old and i feel 100. Don't get me wrong, I am sooooooo grateful that after 4 years of trying to get insurance and trying to get this surgery, it actually is looking like its for real this time, but how much stress can i handle? It's like one thing is finally being fixed, and then something else breaks. I feel like my whole life is crashing down around me and i cant find my way out. And on top of everything else, I have to quite smoking, the only thing that's keeping me sane right now IS SMOKING! I have been a smoker for 5 years, 2 packs a day, what if I cant do it, what if i don't feel like me anymore?
I'm scared, I'm stressed, I'm depressed, And i could really use some support.

HI Tatem....

I can answer the smoking question for you...... Chantix!   My son (age 28) has been smoke free for a year and he feels great.  He said it made him not like the taste or texture of the cigs... and he was a long time smoker and in the army.

Sounds like if you're barely eating and you're gaining 10 lbs per month, there must be some medical reason behind it.  You're so young to have so much going on!  Are your parents and/or family supportive of your efforts?

I wish you the best!

You might want to check with your friend Just-A-Tragedy, she may have some suggestions, or even your mom that is a nurse.

Hi Tatem,

I am so sorry that you have been dealt this hand but trust me there is light at the end of the tunnel. I fought for almost 4 years to get my surgery but it was well worth it. My doctors scale also will not weigh me so I know the frustration. I weigh 455 pounds as of my last doctors visit and had to drive to my surgeons office once a week (25 miles each way) just to get weighed, My body was un willing to give up the weight as well. I tried to lose the lousy 10 pounds the surgeon wanted me to lose and finally they put me on a all protein diet and even then that took almost a month to lose it.

As far as the smoking thing, I was too prescribed the Chantix but my insurance would not cover it. I had the doctor prescribe Wellbutrin which has a side affect to the body making it not be able to stand the tast of nicotine. I also  found a product called Nic-Out and it worked like a charm. It is a filter that you place on the cigarette and removes over 90 percent of the tar and nicotine but does'nt change the taste of the cigarette. And when you smoke, you can see the Tar and Nicotine in the filter and it is flat gross. I smoked for 20 plus years and it is history now.

I know its hard but just keep the faith, all will work out.

Have a great day...............Rick

My friend's daughter had a pituatiary tumor and gained over 10 lbs a month from it.  They were able to remove it though her nose!  She is now as good as gold and all the weight came off.  Have they said what kind of brain tumor?  I know if must be very scary!  You are right.  Smoking has to go.  Your doctor needs to answer all these questions and get things moving!  I am pretty sure they will want to resolve all these health issues before any WLS.  Then, once you are a bit healthier, then they would consider?  You are young enough to completely be healed from these. Besides that, I KNOW from much experience that GOD is a God of miracles!  I will be praying for you, sweetie!  (((Tatem)))

Tatem, I think I remember you from a couple of years ago. you were interested in WLS, but you were so young and no insurance, something like that, right?

Since you think you might have trouble losing, you owe it to yourself to at least check out the duodenal switch WLS. You are more apt to lose more and keep it off easier than with the RnY. I would like to invite you to come to the DS board and read some posts. You will notice a difference. After you have checked it out and still want the RnY, go for it! You will know in your mind/heart that you checked everything out and go for what is best for you. I pray that everyithing works out for you.

Tatem I know you have had a lot to deal with and we try and support you, but you have to find the power within you to pull yourself up by the boot straps so to speak and really be proactive about your health issues especially if they think you have a RARE brain tumor.

I do not know what tell you about smoking. I smoked for 25 years and when the doctor said smoking or surgery....it was not a tough decision.

Stop having a pity party girl and take charge of your life and take on the world!!!

I hope your issues get resolved so you can have wls!

Ok, first of all, you can get weighed on scales, I was 392 and I managed to find plenty of scales that weigh me.  Second, how did you at 18, get to weigh so much?  Took me 57 years to get that big, at your age I was a whole 180, and considered fat.  I haven't yet figured out how kids your age are ending up so big so young.  Second, as Janine states, you need to make up your mind and come to reality.  There is no reason to have surgery if you are going to smoke, you will die from that faster than you would from being overweight.  So you can stop that, you don't need to smoke to live, but eat you must and that is your next problem.  EAT something, your body is in starvation mode.  Eat proteins and low carb and you WILL lose weight.  But there should be no cheating, because that really puts the diet in failure mode.  As far as having another kind of surgery, make sure you check out all kinds of surgery, and I do think the RNY is one of the best, it forces your to curb your eating.  Eating all you want isn't going to quite make you healthy.  Just today I told the DH, I just don't enjoy food any longer and I am glad of that.

So as others have said, get off the pity partry, pull yourself out of the gutter, and think positive.  You HAVE to change that thinking to get to be where you love yourself, not go on and on and complain about life.  YOU put food in your mouth, so control is the main key.  I am wishing you alot of luck, but from me you will not get pity, just reality!

Good luck, Diane

i have to say, not knowing you or ever having read your posts before, that i'm a little shocked at the lack of perspective your post displays.  doesn't it occur to you that many people in the world -- even most people -- would say about you, "how did she EVER let herself get to 392?  i would never allow myself to get that big..."  that doesn't feel supportive or understanding, does it?  so how do you think it feels for the original poster for you to question how she at a younger age got to where she is?  uncalled for -- just my humble opinion.  obviously she came here for support in a time of need.
