The scale at the doctors office couldnt weigh me
I know that I can be harsh at time and sometimes that is what people need. Honestly tho, the question I posed is one that I have wondered about for a few years, how does one person get so heavy at a young age. I wish I knew the answer to that question, or I would have never asked it. I have genetics against me, I ate too much, I did everything at a young age, snuck food in the middle of the night, I really didn't mean it to be mean, I really wondered!
Thanks for taking the time to read some of my other posts!

yeah, obesity is a curious thing -- i wish i understood why we all ended up in this boat as well. i spent most of my life (probably all my life) with a weird relationship with food, but no weirder than a lot of other people i know who have maintained a normal weight. the body is so mysterious...
hope all is well,
sarah
Hello Diane, I have a niece that was 426lbs at the age of 20. She had the RNY Nov 21, 2007. She has lost a little over 200lbs. She has all ways been over weight. That includes me too. I think the problem with kids now days they play Video games and never go outside to play like when I was growing up. Also, parents are afraid to let there children outside by themselves now days with all of the weirdos out there. Most parents don't have time to spend outside with there children. I hope this helps. Thanks Cathy
You could very well be correct on that. I wasn't that active when I was younger either, I know that I have been heavy since about 3, I have the pictures. My parents sheltered me from any activities because back then, asthmatics were to sit around and not do anything. So different now, and my asthma was just made that much worse because both my parents smoked. I think video games are fine for us older kids, keeps the mind sharp, but to sit after school, do homework and then sit and play games, or be online doing other things, perhaps is one of the greatest reason kids are so heavy nowadays.
Thanks for your perspective. Also tell your niece, WAY TO GO, and keep it up. Her life will be so much better now than living and growing up as a fat chick!
Hugs, Diane

Diane There is a difference between giving someone pity, and being Empathetic and compassionate. Have your doctor tell you that you have a brain tumor and then we'll see if you "complain".
I don't pity myself, and I don't want pity!!! All i needed was some optimism and kind words, and I didn't get that from you.
Thanks for your impute.

Hummm, I don't think that having a brain tumor would be the same, and if I did, I certainly not be "complaining" it is it not a "choice" anyone would make. Now being overweight does have some genetics to it, but most of it is shoving food in your mouth. So why don't you take a look at what you are eating, write it down and see if you can't get some weight off BEFORE you get to have surgery. I have been in your lonesome, dark, depressing world, being married didn't help me achieve the happiness I wanted. It was only after I indentifed the problem, and did something about the problem, that happiness was again my friend.
Good luck, and for ANYONE who has a medical condition that was not a choice, I am not here to hurt anyone feelings. I have a list of ailments that is older than are original poster is!

tatem,
i'm so sorry that all these issues are piling up at once -- i'd be pulling my hair out too! the only thing i can say is that you have to try to take things one by one. someone threw an inordinately large and awful load at you at one time, but tell yourself you are strong enough to handle it, and address each issue one by one. allow yourself to fall back on all possible sources of support -- your doctors, your family, your friends, and us at the board. you will make it through!! you obviously value your life and see a potential to get past all this -- i can see your hope to get there -- just keep holding on to that and the other things will fall to the side. please keep us posted on how things go for you, and good luck with quitting smoking! i'm sure it will be hard but it will be a good thing for you to focus on, i'd guess, to keep your mind off the other things which you have less control over. good luck and keep your head up, girl --

Tatem I'm so sorry that you are going through such a rough time. What you are going through is tough for anyone, I can't imagine dealing with everything you are going through at 32 let alone 18.
In the state of CA you do not need to lose weight before getting a referral to a bariatric surgeon or getting weight loss surgery. You need to have your PCP refer you for WLS NOW. Your medical group (if you have a HMO) will deny, you appeal. You don't say how tall you are so I don't know your BMI but I'm sure it's over 40. If you meet NIH criteria for WLS, and your insurance doesn't have an exclusion again WLS, then your insurance will have to approve you without losing any weight pre-op. My profile has info on not doing the 6 month supervised diet/ losing weight prior to WLS
You will need to stop smoking. No way around that. Ask your doc if they can prescribe something to help you quit. You need to take things one day at a time. Maybe if you get your surgery worked out and get approval you'll feel like you're making progress. If you are depressed ask your doc about a prescription for that, you don't need to suffer needlessly.
If you do have a brain tumor make sure that you are getting referrals to specialist in a timely manner. Try not to stress out about it too much (I know easier said than done****il you actually get a diagnosis.
I agree with Karen that you should check out the DS. Feel free to PM me if you need help getting insurance approval. I'm in no way a guru, but I've been through all the hoops and hurdles and can help you avoid my mistakes. Hugs CaliMom
