I am wondering what your experiences have been for those of you that have had RNY with pain control after you are home.  What do they give you?  Is it liquid? Does it taste really bad?  And, do you really want to chase it down with a full glass of water but you can't?  Just a little anxios today.....
Thanks

i think for all WLS, most surgeons will give a liquid vicodin.. i don't remember it tasting that bad but it's definitely not a pleasant drug (very addictive, affects your emotions, sleeping, bathroom-ing, etc. etc.!).  they say it's important to keep your pain well-controlled because it will help you get up and move around sooner (which will in turn make healing faster), but i always try to get off the vicodin (and switch to regular tylenol) as soon as i possibly can.  i don't think you'll have to worry about wanting to chase anything with a full glass of water, no matter how bad it tastes, regardless -- it might take you five hours to get a glass down!  sip, sip, sipping -- one of the joys of recovery...

good luck with your surgery!!

This is one of my concerns.  Tylenol has never worked for pain for me for anything.  So I am wondering if I will have to take the narcotic drugs for longer than ususal.  I hate that sleepy feeling you get from them.  I am glad to find out it doesn't taste that bad.  Yes, I have heard that I will be sipping and that is why I was wondering if the taste of the medicine would make me want a whole glass to wash the taste out of my mouth.

Your response is what I like about his site.  You get live answers from people who have been there.  Thanks so much1  I will be sure to go over these concerns next week at my preop.

I also had liquid vicodin.  Not very tasty, but only took it once.  My pain was so minimal it was almost zero.  Hopefully yours will be also.

I had liquid Lortab as well, didn't taste bad.  I only took 2 doses and then felt I didn't need it or tylenol anymore, (I do have a high threshold for pain tho.)  No worries.

Thanks you guys!  Your posts have helped me to relax.  I do have a high pain threshold as well,  I have been thru 6 previous surgeries so I do know somewhat to expect pain wise.  However,  i have never had a RNY!  I know that in itself is totally different.

Let me ask this.  Is the sipping nonstop all day long?  Do they allow you time for a nap or time for rest to recuperate?  I know they told me that I would have to do my take 48-64oz of liwuid a day but do they expect you to do that from day 1?  Or do you gradually work up to it?  Sorry to ask so many questions.  Just trying to get my ducks in a row!  lol

I was given regular Norco. But I take Kadian everyday which is time released Morphine for another condition. But as far as my WLS  pain it was minimal compared to any of the other 8 surgeries I have had in the last 5 years.
Congratulations on your surgery date.

My doctor gave me Hydrocodone Bitartrate & Acetaminophen oral (vicodin) to sleep for pain 10.5ml
It wasn't bad and it worked.  I had no desire to chase it with a glass of water.  That would be counter productive..it would wash the meds out of your system before it could take effect.

Good luck on your big day!
