Question about Blood Sugar / Glucose levels....Need your experiences

Greetings all,

Well I am having an issue with low Blood Sugar / Glucose levels. Been feeling real weak for the past 4 days and it has been bugging me. I came home Saturday afternoon and got real light headed so just for giggles, I checked my glucose. I was amazed that it was down to 71. I talked to my doctors office and they said drink some apple or grape juice when I feel this way.

I did and it brought my levels up to 94 and I felt a little better. But, I discovered that within 10 minutes of drinking the juice, I had to be in the bathroom. Didnt get sick or have any stomach pain, just had some diaherria (spelling?). Woke up yesterday a little under the weather and had a low grade fever all day and night. Fever broke last night and I started feeling weak again. Drank some apple juice and felt a little better but ended up back in the bathroom.

Called the doctors office and they said to eat some non fat plain yogurt and they understood the minoe dumping issue but until I can eat at the next stage, this may keep occuring.

So I was wondering if anyone here has had the same experience and if so what did you do to solve the issue. I have never been diabetic. Doctor and I would always keep a good track of that but I never thought I would have to deal with hypoglycemia LOL.....

Thanks and have a great day

Hi Rick---(now before you do this---- check with  your doctor of course)----I was diabetic pre-surgery---and after my sugars were scary low too----my dr. told me to take a tsp. of smooth peanut butter---in the evening..... and this helped tremendously.  Once I was able to get more protein in---with shakes--- and a little food---it all evened out----I have no diabetes or hypogycemia now......
anyway---- hope you feel better soon.....

Rick, were you diabetic before surgery, and if so, are you still taking any meds for it?  After bariatric surgery, many diabetics are "cured" within a few days or weeks.  You may want to talk to your doctor about reducing or eliminating certain medications.

Hi Rick,

I was hypoglycemic before surgery and right after I had a bit of trouble. while on the liquid stage, i would get real week and dizzy sometimes. when this happened i knew i needed something more so I would take a can of soup, heat and strain it and drink the broth that way. It always seemed to help.

Good luck!
Sue

Rick,

I was diabetic pre surgery.  I have been taken off all but 1 med, including blood pressure and cholesterol.  I have one diabetic med (actos) left and he will be taking me off that in March I think.  Are you on meds?  All mine came off the Monday after surgery and I had surgery on the Thurs before.

Hi Rick,

I had this happen.  I was feeling funny and checked.  My BG was 73.  I now have a Fage yogurt snack between meals to keep my glucose stable.  I haven't had any problems since.  Good luck and let us know what works for you.

Greetings all,

Thanks for all the replies. I have never been diabetic (a shock to me and my doctor) and was never on any meds. That is what the confusing part was. So the doctor said to start eating some non fat plain yogurt. It has naturally occuring sugars in that and mix some no sugar added applesauce in it and try. Well I did that this afternoon and low and behold my surger went up to 98 and I felt a lot better.

The doctor said this is actually a common issue and until I advance to stage three of my diet, I will really have to watch this. So applesauce and the yogurt have to be incorporated into my diet from now on I guess.

Have a great day...........Rick
