I was going through my binder they gave me in the doctors office. I read that the calcium could not be calcium carbonate and to my surprise I seen the ingridients it is calcium carbonate. I was wondering if I should take it or get the calcium citrate.

Hi Belen,

After talking to the support group and my doctor it was recommended to take the calcium citrate.  Hope that helps.  Good luck!

Hi Belen,

It is very important to switch to Calcium Citrate. You can get a descent chewable at bariatricadvantage.com.
From my understanding, the part of the intestine that absorbs Calcium Carbonate has been bipassed.

I had some calcium carbonate I was taking and thought, some calcium is better than no calcium. I was WRONG. I ended up getting Kidney stones because I couldn't absorb the calcium carbonate. So far as I can tell, I havn't had any trouble since switching back to Citrate.

Best of luck!

Hmmmm! This is an interesting thread... in my paperwork from Dr. Suh, it says that we can take either.. levels of 1500mg for one, or 2000mg for the other... glad I read your responses! But I think I'll be okay anyway, as I bought the Bariatric Advantage chews.

You need to be taking calcium citrate. WLS patients have smaller stomaches (or pouches) so we produce less acid. Calcium carbonate needs an acidic environment to be broken down, whereas calcium citrate is a salt and doesn't need the acid in our stomaches to break it down. If you take calcium carbonate you won't be getting all the calcium you need (because it won't be broken down in your new pouch). Calcium carbonate is okay for non WLS patients, just give it to one of them.

Well I guess I will send my husband to get me the calcium I really need. I just see so many brands that I did nit read the ingredients and thought that it was the one I needed.

If you are having a hard time getting pills down since you are so early out Vitacost has liquid calcium that's not  too bad. I just got my order today and it was not bad at all. it  has 1200mg in 1Tbs serving. I don't think we can absorb that much calcium in one sitting so you might be better off  taking 1/2 Tbs twice (or maybe even 3 times) a day.

Hi Belen, as a few people here have already said, we don't absorb the calcium carbonate. The only thing I am going to add is that even in chewable form we don't absorb the calcium carbonate. Good luck! I use Bariatric Advantage calcium citrate chewables and the wild cherry and the cinnamon are the best flavors that I have found so far.
