Question about recovery

Hey all - I'm somewhat of a newbie. Joined the forum back in November but haven't posted very much. I'm getting closer to my tentative surgery date of 4/21 and I had a question. Assuming I can move my date (which my surgery clinic seems open to), if I am looking to attend a conference 4/22-23, when would be the latest I should try to schedule my surgery? Any suggestions?

As always, I appreciate your advice!

I was feeling good within 10 days of my surgery.  However, I went home after surgery and had NO distractions - sent hubby on a 10 day hunting trip.  I slept a lot, took care of myself, listened to my body and took the time to learn my new eating habits and basically had 100% me time

Hope this helps!  Looking forward to welcoming you to the Losers Bench!

Hi there,

First of all, welcome and you came to the right place to ask a question.  It took me about a week to feel fine.  I came home, didn't go to bed right away, stayed on the couch and watched TV, and then went upstairs later.  I never took any pain meds when I came home.  They gave me some liquid stuff for pain which I never took.  I was down about a week.  I did like Maureen did and listened to exactly what my body said.  Rested when I needed it and did stuff when I felt ok.  It takes your body some time to get out of the anesthesia.  If you have had other surgeries and you have a higher pain tolerance than normal folks, you may be great.  Just take care.  Post anytime, keep us posted on your new date if you get one.

Hmm... I would say that I had a really good recovery with no complications, but even when I returned to work 3 weeks later, I definitely had less energy and felt a bit "fragile".  Is your conference going to be a high energy thing?  Or mostly sitting and watching lectures?  I'm sure you'll be fine, but just be ready to allow yourself a bit more rest than usual.

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery!  So exciting!

Thanks for weighing in everyone! It's definitely not a high energy conference, just requires me to travel by car for about 2.5 hours (with someone else driving) and then sit in an audience for awhile. I was hoping if I could have my surgery no later than April 7th, I might be okay. That would give me a little over 2 weeks to rest. Either that or I'll have to have them push my surgery date past the conference. That would be a bummer but might be the safest bet. I guess I will see what they can do!

Welcome!

I had no trouble recovering but driving in the car was uncomfortable for about a month.  It really wore me out too.   It's 2 hours to anywhere from here so take heed and give yourself at least a month before traveling long distances.  You may be too tired to sit through a class.
