low fasting blood sugar and reactive hypoglycemia.???
Hi everyone. Here I am again with questions. Thanks goodness for you folks! So at my last surgeon's appointment, he decided I was probably having some late dumping issues (reactive hypoglycemia). He gave me some hints on how to manage it. I am able to head it off quickly now with the glucose tablets from the drugstore. I have had to take 3 tablets on three different occasions in the last month. This last week, I saw my GP for my annual, and she ordered a fasting blood sugar test. It came back too low (65). SO now what??? How can I maintain a healthy blood sugar and still avoid the reactive hypoglycemia? Is it common to have both issues?
I am still losing weight, even if it is slower now. I still work out hours and hours each week so I am considered by my trainer to be very physically active. Now I am beginning to notice a drop in energy and and increase in the need for naps. This is new, and I don't like it. What should I do? Can you guys share some advice, info, etc? Please.
I LOVE my RNY but honest, I did not expect some of these side effects, and I am worried about what else is coming down the road at me. On the plus side, my pre-diabetes is GONE, my cholesterol is fine. And I wear size 14 jeans!!!! No more plus size!!!

Greetings,
I am having some of the same issues that you are experiencing. My glucose levels dump for no apparent reason and it is driving me and my PCP crazy. I had no issues with glucose prior to my surgery.
I was told to try and balance with the complex carbs and proteins. Protein will help maintain the glucose levels and so will the complex carbs. The only thing that bugs me is that my PCP sent me to a nutrionist to figure this out and she said I needed to be eating 2000 to 2500 calories a day LOL.........Havent been back since,
I try to keep my protein above 100 grams a day and it seems to help. Ask your surgeon asbout the issue and they should be able to advise you which direction to head.
Have a great day..............Rick

Thanks Rick...I am struggling with the concept that I get hypoglycemia as a result of what I eat (reactive hypoglycemia)and when I don't eat (low fasting glucose). Somehow they must be related? Still trying to figure it out..I will see surgeon again soon and I will ask for a referral to the nutritionist. Maybe I can pick her brain for some info on this...

Hi Cindy, I have over 700 hundred patients in my five offices that have had gastic bypass and are plateaued, gaining weight, or have the symptoms that you are experiencing. If you go to my website and click on the blog section you will see several articles that I have written that try to make sense of the blood sugar issues. One is called "Doctor I have Hypoglycemia". I also have a concept that I have coined called a Sneal that really helps to stabilize blood sugars. Check them out and if you have any questions I will be glad to give you more info.
