I am pre op but i have started using the unflavored Ujury in everything I drink i.e. Crystal Light, SF Wylers and such. I read that after surgery our bodies can only absorb 20g of protein at a meal. So that would mean it would be a waist to ad the Unjury powderto a pre mixed shake that already has 20g of protein or even the Isopure drinks that have 45g of protein. I thought I had it all figured out before surgery and now I'm getting confused as to how to get all the protein in. Thanks...Kristina

Hi Kristina, I have also learned that we cannot absorb more than 20-25 gr at a time of protein. So, in my opinion, yes, it is a waste of protein powder. And another postop told me that her doc said (jeesh.. heresay huh?LOL) anyway,,, that too much protein can lead to kidney stones (like those mega protein shakes of 50-60 grams). If you drink the Isopure.. just split it up a couple hours in between Just my opinion, good luck! T ps.. Protein is critical for healing our bodies as well, so you getting more in pre-op can only help you after surgery!

Where did you read that we cannot absorb more than 20g of protein at a meal? I haven't been able to substantiate that, and have chatted with several surgeons from different parts of the country who are not familiar with any studies that confirm. I chatted with PCP today and she is also not aware of the 20g rule, so I am trying to find some documented studies to show her. If you can help. By the way, tuna and salmon are real high in protein and I found them very easy to digest. Trader Joe's has a salmon chowder that tastes great. Rob

Kristina, Have you attended the support classes at PMRI? Vitamins was the main topic, but protein absortion came up at the July meeting. There seems to be various schools of thought on the protein absortion. I mentioned that Dr. Baag said it is a waste of money to take in more than 20 grams at a time. Danielle, one of the Nutritionist from PMRI, said this was not necessarily true. I questioned the "you can get kidney stones from too much protein " comment that Dr. Baag made to me. Danielle chuckled and said it can't hurt you. I get in 60 grams in over a 45 minute timeframe with just 1 protein drink. I take in 3 more protein drinks a day with 20 grams in each. Total 120 grams so far. I also eat 4 small meals with protein in each. I have not lost any hair at 6 months out. My blood tests readings have all been within range. So do what you think is right for you. I personally went back to my original regime and I'm sticking to it. I did go back to the chewable vitamins, calcium and B12. The chewable part makes sense to me. Although my levels were okay last blood test. I am open to suggestions and there is always room for improvement. Kristina, you really need to be informed. I suggest going to the support meetings and read all you can. ((HUGS)) Elissa

Dear Elissa, Please let us know what the protein drink is that you are able to get in 60 grams of protein. I would like any suggestions that you may have in the area of increasing protein. I am currently at 70 grams, which is what was recommended for my WLS regime. Also, what is the Newport support group like? How does it compare to the PMRI meeting. I was at PMRI last meeting and sat across the aisle from you and bought the protein from Rob. Thanks alot, Mama

Mama Mama, I use Ispoure powdered strawberry. 2 scoops is 50 grams of protein. 12 oz of skim milk is about 10 grams of protein. I only count proteins, I don't count calories or carbs. Not yet anyway. The other protein I use is the unflavored Unjury. 20 grams mixed in crystal lite. Counts toward your liquid intake too. 2 or 3 a day. LOL. The meetings at Newport are a good source of support. They are extrememly informative. The meetings are semi-structured and less formal than PMRI. Some of the same people attend both. Try to make it. I'm gonna try to be there tomorrow night. Hey, Elissa.... I got a question for you regarding the Unjury, babe. Rob was so kind to bring me that half canister of unflavored to the last meeting and I thought I was gonna just sweep up the daily protein in the Crystal Light (because u'rs was soooooo good that day.). However... I mixed one scoop in a PITCHER (not a 8 oz glass as u'r describing) and it turned out awful...very thick, proteiny smell and taste AND after 15 minutes, it was all 'separated'...YUCK! How did u'r ruby grapefruit turn out so well that day? I don't remember having to stir it again at all...and we were there many hours. Also, how do u tolerate ONE scoop in ONE 8 oz glass??? Pls tell us u'r secret! (((hugs))) -Karen
