PMRI Weight loss requirement

Our first PMRI meeting was Tuesday night and the nutritionist told us they had dropped the weight loss requirment at the behest of the doctors. It was a pleasant surprise to all in attendance. They did say that you are expected to maintain your current weight and we will still get weighed in every week. I don't think it is a bad idea to try to lose some weight but the pressure to lose a specific amount within the 6 week class is pretty stressful on top of everything else going on in the months leading up to surgery. My surgeon did not tell me that I would have to lose anything prior to surgery but they will cancel your surgery if you gain more than 20 pounds after your initial consultation. Penny

Penny, I understand what you are saying about the Life Skills class requirement about your weight. At first everyone in my class felt the same way. It is only 2% of your weight, (unless they changed that also) this is not hard to do. Don't let this stress you. It is very simple and very easy to do, unless one is still eating whatever! Don't worry I have faith you will pass with flying colors. It is easier than it looks. Christie 3 1/2 weeks post op

Christie, I am sure you are right. Actually I was not concerned about the weight loss requirement if that was the only problem. I have lost the same 40lbs at least 10 times in the last 10 years. I just gain back 50! My dilemma is that I have Aetna and until I get through the approval process we don't know if they are going to require that I prove failure to lose for an additional 6 months with my PCP. So I was concerned about having to lose at same time I had to "fail to lose". I can drop 10 or 15lbs very easily on the induction phase of Atkins. My problem has always been the long haul. Thanks for the words of encouragement! I am glad to be a part of the Delaware group because I can see the support runs deep. Penny

Acutally, with my thyroid getting crazy at the same time I was putting on weight. That coupled coupled with not feeling good because of it became a major stress factor for me in this class. I couldn't, and not because of trying, meet the weight loss requirment. I am a strong, independent, go after what I want reach my goals type of personality that went home and cried after every weigh in. So to say it is simple and easy to do unless one is still eating whatever is not very accurate. It was the worst part of this experience so far for me. And was impossible for me. My PCP was in shock, that with my TSH levels and PRMI knowing about them, would fail me in this class (and they did) because of the weightloss portion. ugh Gigee

Gigee, Are you saying they failed you because, for other medical reasons, you failed to loose the weight? If those restrictions have been lifted, then who do they apply to? The people who are just now starting classes?? If so, then this is not fair to those of us who are still struggling!! Bonnie

Last night of the class.. weigh in. I did not pass the class because of the weight gain. I was told I had until my appointment with the PMRI medical doctor to lose the weight. My levels are still whacked out. Now, if that has changed because of this change I have not been told. I am keeping my fingers crossed. My appt with the PMRI medical doctor is February 28th. I guess I'll find out then. *shrug* one can only hope. Gigee

Gigee, I can relate to you in a big way. On a more global scale this whole process is frustrating for me because I can usually set my mind to something and make it happen. I can be very determined. But after many years of yoyo dieting I have finally come to realize that I can fight forever or acknowledge I need the help this surgery is going to give me. I think it was Linda B. who said that she felt that this was her way of taking control of something that had controlled her. Perhaps there is a chance they will waive the requirement since you have the medical complication. I would also call the surgeons office and tell them you heard the requirement was discontinued. They specifically said the surgeons had asked them to drop it. I am so sorry that you are experiencing this additional stress. It must be very difficult. Please let us know if you make some progress with this. Penny

I was reading your post and was wondering when they started classes? I had my surgery a year ago this past December 9th. Sounds like they are putting allot of extra stress on everyone before you have surgery, Geese I'll keep you in my prayers that everything goes okay for you. Beth
