DO YOU REGRET YOUR DUODENAL SWITCH??

Hi Violet!  I'm very early out as well. It will be 5 weeks on Tuesday and regardless of how early I am out. I DO NOT REGRET MY DS!!!  I am 30 years old and decided to have this so my little boy would have a more active mother in his life.  Before the DS my life revolved around bathrooms. My family and I couldn't go anywhere, I couldn't go shopping with friends without having to know where a bathroom was at ALL TIMES, as my bowels wouldn't let me live any other way. At work, everyone would walk up to the bathroom door slowly and with a painful look on their faces if it was closed because you guess it. Roxx must have been in there.  Now I can go anywhere with friends and family. I can spend as long as I would like out and about and I NEVER have to go. My morning time at home first thing in the morning and that's it.  It has given me a feeling of being normal that I haven't had in at least 6 years.  Being so early out, of course I have a very limited diet in terms of quantity, but that's ok. I can eat what I want (protein first) and be satisfied and not have to gourge myself to the point of wanting to throw up.  I too will consider more kids when I'm far enough out and all my labs etc., are 100% - and my surgeon said that many people have had very healthy and successful pregnancies. My last one saw me at 320 lbs. This next one will see me at a healthy weight and I couldn't ask for more.  Good luck with your journey, Violet! Rox :)

Tomorrow, I will be 11 weeks post op. I do not have any regrets. I, too, would do it once a year.

Violet, I am 20 mos out from my DS, and I couldn't be happier.   The DS addressed every concern that I had with WLS.  I also had no co-morbidities, but I knew that at my high BMI, it was only a matter of time.  And I didn't want to wait until I was sick, and increase my surgey risk.    I had the surgery, and never looked back.  Nor have a regretted it for even one second.   Yes, I do have to have labs drawn every 6 mos.......not a biggie......I can certainly live with that.   Yes, I have to take vitamins........also not a biggie.  I took Vitamins before.  I just take more now.    I didn't realize,  before I starting dropping weight and feeling really good,  just how bad I felt before, and how much my weight had impacted my life, and the lives of my family.   I feel like I wasted a big portion of my life, so now I don't want to waste one more precious second.   Would I do it again?????   You betcha!!   It's the best thing I have ever done, and not just for me, but for EVERYONE in my life. You are wise to be looking at all of the angles BEFORE you have surgery.  It's a big step, and not to be entered into lightly.   Good luck with whatever decision you make. Marcia

I had my ds at age 67 (i am now 69). I do not think it was the best option for me. I wanted a sleeve, but medicare would not pay for the sleeve, even though it is a much simpler surgery. I did loose all of my eiweight within 14 mo. However  i have spent over 6 weeks in hospitals on clear liquids in the last 6 months. 3 surgeries. Drs did not understad about ds need for vitamins and protein

Last two hospitalizations i demanded iv vitamins. Also contracted C diif infections and could not eat enough. The switch has complicated treatment of other problems, including autoimmune hemolytic anemia, from which i almost died and am still under treatment. You are young and that may make a big difference. I don't regret no longer being diabetic, having normal cholesterol & triglycerides, wearing size 12 clothes (I'm nearly 6 ft tall).  However, I worry about future issues as I age and wonder whst else this dramatic rearranging of my gut might affect.

What are you crazy?? As my user name says ... I LOVE my DS!! I think we *might* have just one person here that regrets their DS.  Even DSers who've had major complications still LOVE their DS. There have been a number of successful post op pregnancies following DS.   Best of luck! Laurie
