The problem is Tracey that every doctor is different however as an informed consumer you should be asking questions.  Most docs are not banded themselves so they don't really know what a bandster goes through.  The same goes for the nutritionist.  I have anemia problems and my pcp says it's directly band related but if you ask most band doctors that's not possible since we don't malabsorb our food.  However, we do eat limited quantities and I never was anemic before.  The first question I would be asking yours is why is your post-op guidelines so very different from the actual post op recommended diet from not one but two band manufacturers.  The manufacturer is the one that compiles the research and gets the FDA to approve their product.  They provide guidelines based on years of research.  Europe and Mexico have been doing bands for years and their post-op diets are essentially the same as recommended Allergan/Realize.  Most of the Mexican doctors were the mentors of the US docs.  They recommend this diet because your band is stitched in place and they don't want the churning of your stomach digesting real food to upset the brand new stitches.  You might not notice the problem now but it may come back to bite you later on.   We HONESTLY were providing feedback on what we have researched and seen on the boards.  I have seen to many people lose their bands to erosion, too many have slips that required surgery so I err on the side of caution and go with recommend guidelines which is what my doc uses.

Additionally, both docs (yours and Jenn B) have very limited Lapband experience.   LAP WLS does not qualify as Lapband experience because RNY and Band patients have very different needs.   Yours has done around 800 and Dr. Blackstone has done only 400.  This is something to definately consider.  With numbers this small that is a strong indication that they don't have documented research that stepping outside of the band manufacturer's guidelines post-op is a good idea.  They simply don't have enough data.

Thanks for the information, I wish Leanne would come back to the forum, I know she was only trying to get information and she did get quite a bit of stuff thrown at her that really no one needs right after having surgery. If it were me I would have been in tears thinking I might have messed up my band. I know Dr. Gupta does more rny's then lap bands but I do trust that 800 is a good amount of practice and I trust that St V hospital of excellance wouldn't have her on staff if she weren't one  of the top surgeons.I know she also has you give yourself shots for blood clots for five days after surgery, and I hear that most lap band patients aren't required to do this unless they have had problems with clots.   I really appreciate this forum and have learned so much here, and I am so glad that there are people like you who can tell us the facts without making us feel attacked, so thank you for that. I will be asking many questions about the post op diet to Dr. Gupta and I will ask her why she has choosen  different guidelines for the diet than what the manufacturer suggests.

We REALLY were not trying to run her off.  We were trying to help her and prevent problems later on. I think she may have mis-read my post which was not directed at her but the other person.  It sounds as if you are going to be an advocate for the most important person in this surgery..YOURSELF... You will do great just on that factor!

Thanks again, I just posted this question to Dr. Curry, so it will be interesting to hear what he has to say. I just want to do the right thing!

We are responsible for our own health.  Period.  I do believe in following dr's orders, but I also know that these orders have to make some sense.  I've read some really bizarre post-op eating plans, including one woman who actually had hamburger the day after her wls (while she was in the hospital).  I had GB, not lapband, so I am unsure of the eating plan for that type of wls.  I agree with others:  be very careful.  If 99% of surgeons say you shouldn't eat something, and yours says it's ok, well, it's a good thing to question that. Hugs, Annette

If my band slips or erodes, I'll let you know. Until then I fully stand by my surgeon and her practice and find it pathetic that the board is so closed minded to accept another diet plan. Obviously there are doctor's offering new eating plans. Let us be mindful that this is a progressive field, and there wouldn't even BE LapBands or GB had a doctor said "why don't we try this". I was an informed consumer, and made my choice off of my research and information.... I think ya'll need to calm down and focus on something that matters.
