How big are these? Are they horse pills? I might buy them if they're not too big.

They may be big because the multi vits are big, as are the calcium from there.

I do it the way that Val was saying before (i think it was her), I put the water in my mouth and hold my head back and then when you put the pill in you really wont have too much trouble.

I was told to take a multi-vit or pre-natal, but I take a prenatal and have had no trouble getting it through my regular pharmacy. Maybe it's just the one that's being prescribed?

I actually just got the FDA recall on my iPhone last week. Same boat as you and would much prefer an Rx equivalent to exactly what has been prescribed to you. (us). Good labs here and why change to OTC prenatals with iron supplements to add if I don’t have to. I have had Natalcare Pic forte for a mere $5/ month’s supply on my insurance. Cheap! I like cheap that works.

The recall doesn’t speak to the discontinuation in manufacturing of Natalcare Pic Forte but a call to Ethex confiremd this Friday morning.

The breakdown on my Natal Care Forte is as follows:
----------
400IU of Vit D3).
Vitamin A (Vitamin A acetate) . . . . . . . . . . . . 5000 I.U.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 80 mg
Vitamin E (dl-alpha-tocopheryl acetate) . . . . .. . 30 I.U.
Vitamin D (cholecalciferol) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 400 I.U.
Vitamin B1 (thiamine mononitrate, USP) . . . . . . . 3 mg
Vitamin B2 (riboflavin, USP) . . . . . . . . . . . . .  . . 3.4 mg
Niacinamide (niacinamide) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 20 mg
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride, USP) . . . . . 4 mg
Folic Acid, USP . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 mg
Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12 mcg
Calcium (calcium carbonate) . . . . . . . . . . . . . .250 mg
Iron, elemental (polysaccharide-iron complex) . . 60 mg
Iodine (potassium iodide) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.2 mg
Magnesium (magnesium oxide, USP) . . . . . . . . .  10 mg
Zinc (zinc sulfate) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .   25 mg
Copper (cupric oxide) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 mg

-----------

What distinguishes most RX Prenatals from their OTC counterparts is the amount of folic acid they contain. Normally- 1.0 mg folic acid (1000 mcg). This, and both the type and amount of iron contained therein. Many of the RX prenatals contain Iron in the form of ferrous iron which can include either  ferrous sulfate, ferrous fumarate, and ferrous gluconate. I'm told the latter is less binding and constipating. Rx Prenatals containing ferrous sulfate generally also contain a stool softener such as docusate sodium which can in and of itself sometimes interfere with iron absorbtion for some. What's key is the amount "elemental iron" each of these types of iron have.

For example; a typical 325 mg iron supplement pill breaks down as follows:

Iron Supplement    Tablet Size    Elemental Iron
Ferrous fumarate    325 mg    ----108 mg
Ferrous sulfate        325 mg ------ 65 mg
Ferrous gluconate   325 mg    ----35 mg

Fishbane S, et al. Kidney Int Suppl. 1999 Mar.4

The closest I have come to finding what we need is "Vinate II" put out by Breckenridge Pharmaceutical, Inc.. Not subject to the recalls but it only contains 27 mg of ferrous gluconate So we would still have to supplement additional iron.

The chief Pharmacist at Breckenridge and I talked briefly about this and he is supposed get back to me with alternatives.

Rock, as usual, you have been more than helpful.

It seems as though there are some manufacturing problems and the drug manufacturers have recalled not ust prenatals, but many other products as well.

Please let me know if you find out anything else!  My labs have been perfect these past four years and I don't want to change if I don't have to!

YAY!

I hate prenatals for us. They're configured all wrong. The ASMBS strongly suggested NO PRENATES last summer at the conference for the same reason.

They're high in folic (not a bad thing), but low in the things we needs lots of, A, D and the iron/calcium in there together makes them fairly useless for both.

Try a regular multi. Not Premier, not Silver, not Performance. Standard Centrum-like multi. It includes the trace stuff, the "unpronouncables" at the bottom.

Then, of course, flesh in around according to malabsorption. ADEK, iron, calcium, zinc, B12 and so on.
