Scabbed over, can I go swimming yet?

Karen, sorry I didnt make my answer a little more clear in my previous post....I swam though it wasnt a public pool....it was my sisters pool!  A public pool has far too many people and as another post said it could have far too much bacteria to put yourself into.  At 6 weeks I did swim...not really SWIM...but rather walked along the waters edge and cooled off.  I wasnt fully cleared for more strenuous exercise for a little over 8 weeks...open surgery and many things done at once.  If your wounds are still "scabs" they could come off in the water and you could possibly get an infection in an open wound...

Just because it is scabbed over does not mean it is a completely healed wound.  You def can still catch an infection.  I def would not.

I had to have my gallbladder out at 14.  Anyway, I thought I could do anything and 3 weeks out, I was completely healed over, no scabs....guess that's youth for ya.
Anyway, I was allowed to go to a friend's house for an overnighter, but we went swimming without permission. It wasn't the water more than the resistance that was my enemy. I didn't even realize how much you use your stomach in the water just being still fully emerced. The pressure is astounding on a healing internal wound. I set myself back some for sure, bc the next day I could hardly move like I had just had surgery.

I vote no. Those scabs will soften and come off in water and you don't need to get a wound infection. They're really nasty and you've done so good so far.

... now i have all my booboos scabbed over, the feeding tube hole, the drain holes, and the incision so now need to know if I can go swimming yet?

This is something you need to seriously call your surgeon and ask him about, to see if you have clearance and are medcially safe for you personally to go swimming according to your health, recovery and medical condition.

Only your DS surgeon or your medical physician can tell YOU if it is ok for YOU to go into a chlorinated pool or seawater ocean/ beach to swim in it and paddle away. It is based on factors to your personal recovery, what you have been or are going through. So call your surgeon or physican regarding this and make sure you are medically clear to do so.

How long does it usually take for all of the wounds to heal - especially the big incision for an open patient?? I realized I that I had no clue.

Stacey, I am just over 6 weeks out and I have scab now from the feeding tube and the drain holes are cleared up. My long open incision is healed up, so give or take 6 weeks, I think.
