How does Xenical Compare?
Hi everyone,
I am currently halfway through my "6 month physician supervised diet", and am firmly planning on the DS. I had a Dr. appt thursday and he told me that I should expect similiar results from my DS that I experienced while taking Xenical. Not to sound gross, but I really hated the Xenical. I ended up with an oily orange discharge that I couldn't control.
I would love to hear from people who took Xenical and then went on to the DS. How similiar are the "poop" side effects?
PS: Thanks for the ongoing education! I have learned so much from this forum.

Hello Kim!
I never took Xenical, but I did have the DS and depending on what I eat I will have that orange discharge that you mention. I can control it by what I eat, but if I eat too much fat since my body doesn't absorb alot of it, it comes out. I personally love that I can't absorb much fat since before I had the DS I was chronically constipated. Now, if I am constipated, I just eat more fat. If my stools are too loose, I just cut back on the fat. I like it that it is something I can definitely control.

Hello Kim, just want to state that Cita is barely 5 months post-op. She is very early in her DS phase and that first year is very different than if you are over a year or 2 out.
In regards to Xenical, I took Orlistat back in the 1990s to lose 20 lbs in a control study (it is now known as over the counter Alli). With Orlistat. i had an oily leakage that was the pits if you had to work because my back pants would be stained, especially if you had to wear white pants. With the DS, this does NOT happen that we have oil slick on a daily basis if we eat fatty or high fat food. For some early out, it may, but it is rare and depends what you ate and how far out you are.
The majority of DSer, do not have oily leakage coming out of their butts if they eat high fat food. The food in how it is malabsorbed and processed through our digestive system is not the same as using Xenical, Orlistat or Alli. We do eliminate it, but doesn't cause diarrhea or oil slick for many of us. Like Xenical, fat are malabsorb, but differently and best thing is the way we process our fat intake is for a lifetime and with no need to take weight loss meds to get there, as in taking fat malabsorbing Xenical.

In the beginning yes you will have the orange slicks in the toilet. For me it was never uncontrollable and it didn't last. I was excited the first time I saw it because I knew my DS was working. You have to remember in the beginning your new plumbing is still healing and getting used to its newself. However you can control what comes out of you by what you put in you. At 16 months out I do not have the orange slicks anymore and I do eat ALOT of fat.
I tried both!
With DS I could get similar to xenical effect early out, if I ate too much oil (LIQUID!!!) - the Balkan style fried veggies floating in oil, white cheese or Italian sausages packed in oil, etc. And not a little bit, but the whole meal had to be super oily. Now at 8 months out I can eat a pound of fried veggies and DO NOT have the "orange explosion". As for the solid fats, like in meats and cheeses, they never turned orange and never drip - solid in, solid out.
Hope it helps.

Hi Kim,
I can only tell you what I have experienced. I have been on Xenical as well, back in the day.
Right after surgery (for the first 3-4 months) I had the oil, but it was not leakage. This was only when I ate a massive amount of oil (for some reason, mayo always did it to me). Now that I am 8 months out, they only show up on super heavy greasy food days and are not an issue.
I don't leak at all, and I only see them when I go to the bathroom on the super heavy greasy days.
I would say that it definitely depends on how and what you eat and at what time frame.
It is completely managable. No issues here.
Best of luck!
