How NOT to spend a precious day of vacation

I have experienced some serious business pain in my life, but this was damned near the top of the scale. There is something special about that kind of pain. UGH.

I think it *might* have come through earlier today. You better believe I'm guzzling my water by the gallon!

I, too, have wondered where you have been! I'm so sorry you had to go through this but I'm so thankful that it was something that simple (although it doesn't seem to be when you are feeling it). Sending prayers that that thing finds it's way back out of your body where it belongs and very quickly!!

Oh crap. I had one of those a few months ago--hurt like a ***** And as you know, I know some *****es.

Take care. Drink plenty of water. Rabkin had me up my calcium after my kidney stone, so you may want to see about that.

This post made me laugh out loud.  A knowledge of WLS is second nature for most of us, so it's funny when you encounter "the others" who know nothing about our world.

Is there anything about being a DS'er that might make us more prone to kidney stones?

Malabsorption of calcium is my guess. I think Husted did some talking about oxalates, etc. Lori Black has some info on it.

I would guess it is the malabsorption, also - people with Celiac Disease are more prone to kidney stones, and there is speculation that in Celiacs they are due to the malabsorption that is caused by that condition (CD).  I'm not exactly sure what it is that people with CD AREN'T absorbing which makes their body form stones, but they are also much more prone to gall stones and gall bladder issues (I guess they are "flip" sides of a similar coin).  It may very well be that because they don't absorb calcium that their body is trying to hold onto it, but I don't know that for sure.

Anyway, I'm glad that the stone has passed and you are feeling better.  I know that my husband is now VERY sure to drink enough liquid every day - he doesn't ever want to have that kind of pain again!

Good grief, Elizabeth! That had to be a nightmare. I am so glad they were able to determine it was the stone. I hope it passes without too much pain. So glad that Dr. Peters was in contact with you and the ER. Get better soon!

Oh no, EN!! I'm so sorry you've been through the wringer! I've been wearing multiple hats at work this week and have had precious little OH time, so I missed this yesterday. Sending lots of good energy hon!

Dr. Husted posted this on the subject:
Topic: RE: Kidney Stones as a result of TOO MUCH calcium & vitamin D

"BPD/DS results in increased oxalate production in the intestines, and the easiest way to address this (easier than following a low-oxalate diet) is to take calcium carbonate (i.e. Tums) with meals. Calcium carbonate is not that well absorbed in weight-loss surgery patients, which is okay if you are taking it to reduce calcium oxalate stones. It binds to the oxalate in the intestines, making it less absorbable and, therefore, less likely to form stones.

John D Husted, MD"

But Vitalady disagrees. She says adding calcium carbonate will cause kidney stones. What to do with two of your idols disagree?? I dunno...

I hope your problem is gone in a flash. Keep us posted, please!
