Why DS over RNY?

Are these smelly farts uncontrollable, and can be heard and smelled while you are at work.  I know a nasty question? But hate to be embarrassing myself at work, especially me trying to show a good imrpression with my work.

The gas and smell is controlled by your diet.  Many people find that being on a probiotic helps, even pre-op.  If you become lactose intolerant, you avoid milk products or use lactaid if it works for you.  If you're sensitive to sugar alcohols, avoid them like the plague.  Some folks are sensitive to white flour/sugar/gluten, etc and avoid them completely.  Others might eat some but may wait until a time when they won't be around others.  I'm just about a year out and gas is not a problem.  I've never farted at work (knock on wood) yet.  I get gassy if I have too many carbs but I'm trying to maximize my protein intake to make the most of my weightloss window anyway so I usually don't have an issue with eating too many carbs.

They are very controllable with diet and probiotics.   Unless I eat the wrong food, it is better today, than before surgery.   90% of the time, I have less gas and the smell less than before surgery.  I have also cut our all wheat, sugar and other simple carbs, so I am eatting much better than I did presurgery.

Okay, the more I hear about the gas, its starting to sound like regular ole gas, nothing out of the norm.  Now when I eat certain food with milk, I tend to have gas.

If I eat simple carbs or sugar alcohols, it is very bad, so I stay away from those foods.

Katie,

I think that really varies from person to person, and can largely be controlled by one's diet. Because of the malabsorption, it can be a side effect of either DS or RNY.

Personally, I have no issues with diarrhea since my DS. In fact, because of all the supplements I take, I tend to run toward constipation. My farts do not smell any worse than pre-op, and I rarely get gas. My poo does smell a little worse from the malabsorption, but no big deal. Poo stinks anyway and they make Lysol for a reason.

Do you think if I took something for gas and lactose it would control the gas?   Has anyone tried that?

I drink Lactaid milk w/o any problem.   Heavy cream also doesn't cause a problem.

I'm probably the wrong person to ask since I don't get much gas. However, I have seen other people post that they take Gas-X or lactaid to help with those issues. In general, I think people find them very manageable with a combination of approaches.

Some people handle it by just waiting until later in the day to eat foods they know will be "fartogenic".

RNY gas is nothing pleasant. Diarrhea as a long-term complication of the DS is non-existent--if you were in that situation, you would be given digestive enzymes, or in the rarest of cases, have a revision.
