Why DS over RNY?
Another big "selling point" for me when I was in the research stage was revisions. I visited the revisions board and the regrets board and read there as I wanted to find out all the negatives to each as well as the positives. I found out that when people have WLS issues (don't lose enough, gain weight back, mechanical issues) most of them end up revising to the DS. I read no stories of a DSer revising to another procedure. I also read lots and lots and lots of regrets from thos with lapbands and RNYs. I didn't see any regrets from DSers. I'm sure there are probably some out there somewhere, but the number is obviously a lot smaller since they're not showing up here. I figured why not get the surgery everyone revises to when things go wrong the first time? Why risk it and go with a "lesser" surgery only to potentially need another surgery a few years later?
1. I posted this same question a few months ago. It led me to change my plans for an RNY and just yesterday met with Dr. Herron in NYC for DS.
2. From what most people say there is more gas/****z on DS, not close to the horror stories people tell though
3.People trying to prove DS is better because people get revisions to DS from other surgeries is silly. DS is the most drastic!
You CANT put a lap band on a previously DS stomach
You CANT sleeve a stomach that has already been sleeved
You CANT RNY a stomach that has already been DS (from what I understand)
I think DS is the best WLS choice out there, but there is a lot of chearleading in the DS forums, make sure any info you take can be confirmed

I would have to disagree with you about #3. You CAN put a lap band over a DS sleeve. Some surgeons do resleeving to make sleeves smaller (though this is a risky procedure). A revision of the common channel is also possible.
The fact that such revisions are rarely needed with the DS does say something important about the DS and its efficacy as compared to other procedures. I don't think it's at all "silly".

I'm not trying to prove it's better. I was explaining my thought processes when doing my research and making my decision. My thoughts were not along the lines of no revisions from DS to something else, but focused on the other surgeries that did revise to a DS. If the others don't work and you go for something else (ie something that will work better) and that something else ends up being the DS, then why not get the DS from the beginning?
You can re-sleeve a DS stomach. (I do know of one person who had that done. I believe she started out SSMO and lost a lot, but wanted to lose more and got re-sleeved.) You can also get the intestinal portion undone, essentially revising to a sleeve only.
I bet you could RNY a previous DS stomach. It's still a fully functional stomach, so I don't see why you couldn't make it into a pouch. I don't know why anyone would ever want to, though! ;)
I agree that there is a lot of "cheerleading" on the DS board. There are some who have also had issues with bad deficiencies and some with diarrhea and some with constipation, etc. That's why you should read LOTS and do LOTS of research to make sure you get the good and the bad.
(BTW, Jon, I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I'm not sure how my typed words are going to come across.)
