Since we talk about a "DS IQ test...."
Let's brainstorm here. We know it's about more than IQ and BMI. In a perfect world, how would we structure a surgeon's practice to make it more likely that they'd only give a DS to a qualified candidate? What *defines* a qualified candidate?
What tools does a candidate need to succeed?
Let's work on this and make something of it that we can present to our surgeons, to ASMBS, etc. Think grassroots reform here!

Some sort of reading comprehension test. I mean so much of life after DS REALLY depends on being able to do your own research. If you can not first figure out how to do research, but also understand what you are reading well my friend stay away from WLS!
ETA You could ask questions about real life situations that DSers experience. Kind of like on a job application when they want to know what you would do or how you would react in any given situation. That could answer a lot about a persons comprehension of post op life and responsibilities.

Oooo yes. Can you come up with any currently existing (well, Google searchable) tests that might fit the bill? Remember we're trying to compose someting to present to the, ahem, professionals, here, so we gotta use proper citation and research techniques (which are frequently annoying, but hey, rules are rules ya know?)....
Wow there are a lot. Mostly for elementary age. But I did find this www.majortests.com/sat/reading-comprehension.php There are several Reading comprehension tests there.
Oooo good link! Can we come up with any additional parameters that we think are important for basic reading/knowledge/common sense (running out of names here) comprehension?
I think I would want to have some kind of very basic anatomy vocabulary test, along the lines of knowing the difference between esophagus, stomach, intestine and colon.....Or knowing how to describe pain with more than "my stomach hurts" when it's really half an inch below your tongue, y'know?

My eyes are getting droopy (I turn into a pumpkin after 10 PM)
I found this www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/anatomy/digestive/ I am sure we could come up with a better one. But if we could have this diagram or a similar one Keep the arrows remove the Names. And have them fill in the blanks. That could be basic understanding of anatomy. Could do the same with a diagram of the finished DS.
I think this is very important when complaining of pain www.health.com/health/library/mdp/0,,hw139328,00.html Obviously knowing where it is located. painresourcecenter.com/main_e_howtodescribepain.asp

*waves at pumpkin* Sure you're not a zucchini? *grin* Loving the links! If you have time and energy to think about how to revamp them, input woud be TERRIFIC. We don't have a deadline on this, and if the thread gets lost, feel free to PM me. I'm terribly tempted to just jump on all of this and make it into a big fat deal, but I have to control myself and focus on my classes :-p. Gotta take our time and do a major collaboration on this.
