Do colonics help us who have constipation?

I have had DS surgery.  I have developed bloating, gas, and alot of BM that was confirmed with tests.  I have done supplements, fiber, exercise, water, magnesuim oxide and everything else your site has offered.  Has any one tried colonics?  Did they help?  Please no other suggestions.  I just need to know if colonics work?

Really? You've tried EVERYTHING else this site offers? How do you know this? Have you used Miralax? Have you wayyyy upped your fat intake, like swallowing several jiggers of olive oil per day? Have you been tested for slow bowel motility? Have you tried regular enemas? Colace?  Mineral oil? A TRUE elimination diet? Probiotic therapy? Enzyme therapy?

I'll tell you what. Why don't you do this site a service and go try colonics and then report back on how they work, okay?

Bless you so very much for your response.  I am on Miralax now, I have upped my fat intake 400 grams a day,  I had slow bowel motility confirmed with six different tests in the last month.  Probiotic therapy was tried for a prolonged period of time. Enemas were extreemly painful so I could not continue.  I have not tried Colace but I have tried Dulcolax. Enzyme therapy  did not help with digestion or gas.  I have tried a modified elimination diet.  I am going for my first Colonic today   -   Huray!!!!  I will keep you posted.

I hope it works, and I apologize for my tone. So many people come on here insisting they've read and tried everything for (fill in the blank), but it's obvious in moments that it just ain't so. It gets very frustrating.

You might get more responses if you post a thread asking for input from folks with the bowel motility problems.

Hello,
I have pelvic floor disorder / low motility. I have had to manually remove stool since I was a very small child, regardless of the "hardness of the stool, although pudding-stool can pass mostly unaided. Often hear "...did you know you are full of stool?  " with a tone of disgust----as though I am responsible for this ""disagreeable state!" To me, it is what it is, no big deal. This has, of course, worsened with all of the calcium and iron we must supplement. After a long road of trial and error, potholes full of rectal fissures and hemrhoids, I consume A LOT of water, DSS (abt. 5 250 mg in divided doses/day), sennakot (2-3 / day), Magcitrate (3 / day), freely consume fat, and find that exercise, even walking, to be key to keeping my gut motility intact.  Benifiber, metamucil and Miralax only serve to bind me up,   plug me up ! Increasing dietary fiber is helpful, but sometimes hard to do, as I often feel too full after meeting protein and elemental supplement requirements.
So, my point is, ask your pharmacist to guide you towards a combination that works for you, doesn't bind with your supplements, and doesn't lead to any toxicity.
Best of luck!

...and, I forgot to add, I wonder if colonics would be removing, therefore depriving your body of nutrients by flushing them out too quickly. I think there must be a balance of dwell time in the small bowel to absorb and flushing your large bowel will stimulate the motility through your entire gut depriving you that time. So, I'd carefully watch my labs if you start this as a regular regimen. Rather an expensive option.

Hey, Susan,
And, I might not be understanding your post as you meant it, so forgive me if I'm off target here...
The colonic would only flush the large intestine, and it's my understanding that the only thing absorbed there is water, so, no nutrient loss there.
Or, did you mean that because of activity in the large intestine, it would cause the small intestine to work faster?
Again, sorry if I'm not getting this.

I cannot imagine that this could be good for colon health after having changed your anatomy so drastically.
When did you have your DS? Have you asked a professional, like your surgeon, if this is a good idea after having been altered?

Hi Caprice,
I am not an expert on anything, but do have 32 yrs exp. as a nurse and 55 yrs in this body. From that perspective, irritating / stimulating the lg bowel will "wake-up" the sm intestine. And,yes , the lg intestine's job is fluid resorption.

HI,

I too have had issues with constipation since i was about 4 months out . I went to a gastro last week to talk about this issue.

His conclusion (and yes he knows the DS)  is based on the following facts,

-my vit D is high with a very small amount of supplementation
-bone scan at 18 months post op came back the same as pre-op.
- my weight loss has been more like a RNY weight loss pattern then a DS'ers
-My ferrtin and other tests related to anemia rebounded quickly when i started taking iron

Therefore I probably don't have alot of malabsortion, so we have reduced my calcium from 3000 iu a day to 1800 iu a day, and my iron from 5 days a week to 2 days a week.

We are going to retest my ferrtin and ionized calcium levels in January and see how they are doing.

Making this small changes has made a world of difference, I can go to the bathroom with out manually helping my bowels along.

Just some food for thought,
