Morgan-

H to the N!  I don't think I would even try flying at that point.  Of course, I've seen some DSer's get up and around like nothing happened a week after surgery.  I would say ask your surgeon to give you another date...beleive me, the DS is worth the wait!  Your family comes first!

No way.  Not me anyway.  I didn't go anywhere but bed to chair to walk to sip at that point.

I just rode the 10 hr trip from Denton 3 weeks after my DS if was exhausting.
Trip after my recent resleeve was a little better but happy I wasn't behind the wheel.
Either you need to reschedule to accommodate your parents anniversary. Or follow Diva's advice.
I hope your parents and family are being supportive of your decision to have WLS.
Good Luck!

I traveled from Brazil at two weeks post-op with no problems and it took us approximately 15 hours with the layover and another 1 1/2 hours to drive home from the airport.  I had a heparin injection the morning we left.  That being said, talk to your doctor for guidance.  If you are driving you have the ability to get out and walk every hour.  Otherwise if you get the thumbs down on travel I'd switch my date by a couple weeks.

Please change your surgery date. It's not like you can claim to have been unaware of this anniversary and your parents will be very hurt if you can't wait a few weeks rather than miss their very special day.

IF you must travel after surgery, driving or flying are NOT your only options. There is the train...and if you are willing to pay for it last min, upgrading to a handicap room is worth it.

We traveled to and from NYC by train for my husband's DS. We rode the train less than a week after he had surgery and he did just fine. The advantage over the other two methods is you can get up and walk any time you like and do not have to stop to do so.

I would not even consider it.

Long after my surgery - a few months - I still had issues with nearly falling asleep at the wheel when I was driving more than an hour.   Even if you feel really great in general, you will be exhausted most of the time.

Fly.  Maybe you could get a friend to drive you but it would be a difficult trip, even if you did that!

Thank you all for your care and concern. I appreciate your advice. In talking with my parents they told me not to come. my health was more important than a little party. I am not able to change the surgery date, as I am on Cobra and my hubby is out of work. We can not afford to extend this expensive insurance much longer. It sounds as if their party might get moved to another month any way. Either way, I will not be going so soon after surgery. Thank you.

So glad they were understanding!

What will you do for labs and followup, not to mention the potential for complications, if you drop your Cobra? Do you realize that once you have surgery, various policies might give you a very hard time about insuring you if you have a gap in coverage? I know the laws have changed, but there is still potential for trouble. And if something happens in your insurance gap, you are screwed. Think very hard about the dimes to dollars ratio on this.
