Saw Dr. Wheeler yesterday
I saw Dr. Wheeler yesterday and all my tests are fine, so its a go for the RNY. I have one last appt. today, (pap) and Dr. Wheeler told his staff to go ahead and prepare to submit to my insurance. They said my insurance was quick, it was only a matter of day, not weeks! I am scheduled for pre-op teaching on Jan. 30, couldn't make it to the class on the 16th because of my work schedule. Oh, Dr. Wheeler also informed me that my insurance now pays for the lap-band as well and asked which I wanted. I am going ahead with the RNY, but am curious to know reasons why people out there chose the surgery that they did... please respond with your feed back!
I chose the lap band because I can not be off work 4-6 weeks. Plus my friend had the lap and she lost 210# in about 2 years and she did wonderful. It works quite like the rny, but not as much surgery. You have to be very careful what you eat, not too fast, and not too much, and chew things very, very well almost to the liq stage like rny. It just everyones preference I guess. The rny you loss alot faster too, and you do not have to keep going back for fills like the lap band. Sandi
With the amount of weight that I had to lose, the RNY was the most effective surgery for me. I was up and about within hours of sugery and was cleared after only a few weeks.
I'm just a hair less than 4 months post-op and I've already lost 75lbs. I hope to reach the century mark before my 6 month anniversery.
Anyways, the bariatric center that did my surgery, only does RNY's. They had the statistics that showed the RNY has better long term results as to the Lap band for someone of morbid obesity. It sounded good to me and so far, I'm not disappointed.
Good luck--

When I went for my seminar/consult I had my mind made up to get the LAP-BAND. But after listening to the surgeons presentation and meeting with him privately I decided on the RNY.
He stated that for a lot (not all) of men my size they only lose 70-80 pounds with the LAP-BAND and then stop. He said I needed to lose about 240 pounds as quickly as possible and that the RNY was the best way to accomplish that. He said both surgeries were good and he would do either one I wanted.
Since my BMI was 58 and I needed to lose so much weight I thought te RNY was the better choice for me. Plus I liked the idea of not having to do fills and not having a foreign object in my body. I have lost 131 pounds so far and am very happy with my decision.
Good luck with your surgery. I look forward to seeing you on the losers bench.
Thanks everyone for your support and feedback! I love hearing everyone's opinion and the reason why they chose what they did...guess that is why I am addicted to this site like I am. I am 5'3 and need to lose min of 100 pounds, but my goal weight is 120. So, I thought the RNY would be best for me...besides, I have a very addictive personality...I love food, so I think the RNY will be the best to help me out with that in the long term.
Thanks again every one...I appreciate all of you so very much!!
