When to start PHASE 3????????? HELP!!!
I am so confused. I called my Dietian Lisa, yesterday and told her I will be starting my Phase 3-soft/pureed meal plan this thursday,1-18-07. She said no, you have to go all of the way thru week 3, ok. Now I am more confused. I had my by-pass on 12-28-06, on a thursday, and to me this is 3 weeks. I don't get it, according to her, I have to be on Phase 2 for 28 days. Is it me, or is she counting wrong? I have to do something else, I can't eat on Phase 2 anymore, I am so sick of it. Please someone help me here, if she is right I will do what she tells me to, but if not, I would like to know, when did you all start Phase 3?
Leatha

Going by what I did, this is how I see it.............
Surgery 12/28/06
liquids for two weeks - til 1/11/07
mushies/pureed for two weeks - til 1/25/07
start adding regular foods on week 5 - start on 1/26/07
First fill will be @ 6 weeks PO
They also told me to:
Take prenatal vitamins; Get in 64 oz of liquid per day (with 32 oz being water) (Crystal light can count as water too!); Always eat proteins first, then veggies.
The mushy/pureed stage includes scrambled eggs, tuna (the pink is easier to eat because it's not as dry or chewy), applesauce, puddings, soups, yogurt, oatmeal, cottage cheese.... and cottage cheese has loads of protein if you can't get it any other way. Anything that you can mush up and not have to chew a lot. These are just some ideas to help. Maybe I mentioned something you haven't tried and it will help you get through the last week. I'm sorry!! I know it's hard. But, it doesn't matter how many times you have to eat. Just eat every two hours or something, if you need to, if you are hungry. And drink, drink, drink between meals. You can do this!!! I know you can. If I can, anyone can.
I go tomorrow for my first fill, I had my surgery on Dec. 5th. So I had a few extra days stuck in there, because they made my first appointment a few days later than the exact date it should have been. I have noticed I feel like I eat like a pig now. So, I'm ready for that first fill. And, my weight loss has stopped. I lost 21 lbs the first two weeks! Then I lost a few more...probably 8 lbs. Now it's down to zero. It goes up two, then down two, or up 1/2 and down 1. So, I'm ready! I can't wait to start exercising and losing again. I haven't done that first thing as far as exercise. I promised myself that I was going to do exactly what the doctor said. So far, so good. But sometimes I get so hungry!! And, it's because I'm tired of the same old thing and can't find what I want. So, I just skip it and end up eating cottage cheese, or drinking a dang protein shake. I have trouble eating some foods already. I"ve thrown up 4 times already because it got stuck in my throat. Or that's what it felt like. And, I didn't think that would be the case until I was actually filled. I'm not sure if it is my hiatal hernia they found when I had surgery, or if it is the band. I'm going to ask him about it tomorrow.
I hope I have given you some ideas. I know what you mean about being on the same phase for so long!!! It does get frustrating and boring. But, hang in there. It's almost time for some REAL food! ha ha
If you need some support, just let me know. I'm here for ya! And, I completely understand the waiting thing. I hated it too!
Hugs,
Sharee
Hey Leatha,
I think it is so weird how each doctor has a different way for us to eat after surgery. I was able to eat mushy foods the Weds. after my surgery - 5 days post op. It was foods like scrambled egg, mushed up cottage cheese, creamed soups, mashed potatoes. I couldn't eat hardly any of it until almost two weeks post op, but I may have gotten down a bite or so. I think as long as you are getting your 60g of protein from your protein drinks daily and feel okay, you should be able to start nibbling. Did you have complications or are they treating your case special for any reason?
I try to eat two "meals" a day now - usually an egg fro breakfast and either cottage cheese or smashed pintos with cheddar cheese melted on top. Some days, I don't eat all of it and some days I do. Each day is different with our new bodies and we just need to learn to adjust.
By the way, yesterday ends your third week after surgery - day 21 and today starts your 4th week - day 22. How is this dietician counting? Have you been on all liquids all this time? I couldn't do it. If I didn't get something to chew and satisfy me, I would have gone crazy before now. I have even eaten some chicken and tuna and had no problems. You may want to call a nurse at your doctors office and ask her. Did the office give you a post op diet plan? Maybe the dietician is confused.
Good luck Leatha! - Ginger
