On my pre-op liquid diet, have a question...

Can you say SUCKS A$$? Wow. I can see how liquids after the surgery will be a bit better with just a small pouch to fill. But wow, I still have this fat girl belly too fill! The good thing is, I've felt hunger pangs more in the last 2 days than I have in the last 2 years. I'll muddle through it, it will be so worth it in the end. For you others, what did your doctor cite as the reason for the pre op liquid diet? I've seen conflicting reasons. Would appreciate any clarification. My sweet husband brought me home a single rose this morning, said he was proud of me for having the courage to something so positive for myself. How cool is that? I am indeed blessed. Lori

Hi Lori, My pre-op liquid diet was for two weeks and my surgeon told me it was so my liver would shrink. Katrina

HI Lori, I only had to do the pre op liquid diet for two days prior to surgery. For 30 days prior to that I had to do protein only for the liver shrinkage. My doc said the liquid diet was to make sure that there was no stool in the bowel etc. As you can see though each Doc is different. Your DH sounds like a sweetie! When is your srugery?

My doctor only requires a 48-hour pre-op liquid diet, and it was misery for me. So I feel your pain!!! *hugs* What are your specifications? How many carbs are you allowed?

No specifics on carbs or proteins, just a full or clear liquid diet. Things like yogurts, soups, and protein drinks. I've cheated a few times and had some scrambled eggs, but I figure they're protein and geez, the liquid thing is hard to do. Lori

In that case... - Have you tried looking around in the soup aisle at the grocery store? I found a lot of goodies that I liked there, including Campbell's Gold Label soups. They're good. - For your sweet tooth, I recommend Jello Sugarfree Pudding Cups. There's like 3 flavors of those that I love, but mostly the chocolate vanilla swirl. I loooove those. Or sugarfree Cool-Whip. It has 3 carbs per 2 tablespoons, so if you have a craving, you could have a few spoonfulls without feeling too guilty. And in my opinion, it tastes as good as regular. - Cream soups, because broth gets OLD quick. - Lite & Fit Yogurt, not sure what the brand is, but it says "Lite & Fit" on the packaging. I loved the strawberry. Just 4 carbs and no sugar - it helped me through a rough spot in my day a couple times. Those were my favorite things. They helped get me through the liquid pre-op diet. Hope that helps.

Hello I had my surgery on jan 18th and also had to do a 2 week liquid diet, I was also informed it was to shrink my liver, and my sticking faithfully to the liquid diet would determine whether I had the operation open or laprascopic, depending if he felt he had enough room to work around the liver, good luck on your surgery..........

Hey Lori!! I start my pre-op liquid diet tomorrow!! YUMMM...Can not hardly wait...Right??? My surgeon requires a diet supplement called Optifast. I have no choices except for Vanilla, strawberry and choc. protein shakes and chicken or tomato soups. It is not your typical soups either. BUT..... Like you said it will be worth it in the end!!! So, Here's to you and good luck to us both!! I will need it!!
