I'm wondering if a dog can get a cold? Our samoyed, Snowball has a cough. She has had all her shots and doesn't seem to be too sick, she just has a cough. She's eating like a horse which is normal. I guess I should mention she's an outside dog. Her and our sheltie stay out all the time. She loves the snow. She's always rolling around in it. I'm just worried and feeling pretty helpless because I don't know what to do for her. Its Sat so I can't call the vet until Monday. We have to go out of town early Monday morning to a funeral for Adams uncle. I'm planning on calling the vet anyway. Should I take her in just for a cough or do they generally just give them something like a cough syrup? I'm lost when it comes to doggy colds. We've had our sheltie Dan for almost 6 yrs now and he's never been sick. Thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated!
Hugs
Ange and Adam
P.S. She's not a old dog either, she's not even a year old yet.
I would call just to double check. Does she have a fever? You can tell by feeling her nose. If her nose is warm then she is running a bit of a fever. Also, is she up to date on her shots? Could this be Kennel Cough? Has she been around other dogs your not familiar with who may not have been vaccinated? I would call the vet as soon as you get a chance on Monday just to make sure!
I'm going to give them a call in the am. I've given her a penicilin shot and she's eating and playing. Our dogs our in the back yard and other dogs can't get in. Both of ours have had their vaccinations. Whats kennel cough? She won't sleep in her dog house often. She loves to lay in the snow. I don't know if thats a samoyed thing or if she's just nuts but she's my baby and I hate her being sick.
