I had Gastric Bypass in September 2006. I am having trouble with my stomach. I think it could be milk. I hurt in the upper part of my stomach and have alot of gas. Could this be milk. I remember someone in a class or seminar somewhere talking about this.

Dairy products do bother alot of people after surgery. I am thankfully not one of them, however my daughter is. If you are having problems, a call to the doctor would be in order. If nothing more than to ask about it. I still have problems with most meat and breads. I get that same feeling you are describing and my doctors office says either I swallowed something too big with out chewing it enough. It passes, but I am not a happy camper until it does.

I agree with Sherryl. I know when I don't pay attention with how fast I'm eating and chewing my food well; I get a crampy, gassy, feeling in the upper left of my stomach. I tend to drink to push the food through to stop the (sometimes painful) feeling. I don't drink milk, but have eaten SF/Low Carb ice-cream, cottage cheese, and cheese, without any adverse effects that I can tell. If you are thinking it's related to dairy, have you thought about trying Lactose free dairy products? Maybe give that a try and see how you do. Another thing is to also maybe try alternatives to dairy. For example, instead of using milk, I'll use soy milk in my shakes. It's better tasting (to me anyways) and adds more flavor in my recipes. If the problem persists, you might want to go ahead and call Dr. Nighbert and see if it's something else. Good luck-- Dee

Hi there, Milk hates me now. I used to drink 3 or 4 glasses of milk a day. Now after one sip, it is AWFUL! Does the pain and gas start after you have had milk? If so, then my guess is you have become lactose intolerant with the milk. Milk bothers me but I can eat cheese, and cottage chese just fine. As always though double check with your doc!

I had surgery in Oct. and until a month ago had no problem with milk...Now its a different story...I have a lot of discomfort after drinking it, and can no longer mix my protein powder in it, have to use water...Cottage cheese, or other forms of cheese, and yogurt do not bother me...I have been told that it can be a temporary thing...I sure hope that it is...cause I love milk. Hi Mark. I was mildly lactose intolerant before surgery, and it's only gotten worse since. I now make my protein shakes, and even cook with soy milk! It took a little while to adjust to, but it doesn't bother me now. I know when I do have a lot of milk (I'm talking more than an ounce or two), my stomach starts to hurt, I feel sick to my stomach, and I get painful gas "pains" in my stomach until it passes through. My big intolerance right now is hard boiled eggs. *shudder* But I'm doing okay handling meat, crackers, pasta, etc. Good luck! Kat

Hard boiled eggs are still bad on me.... ugh!!! My biggest problem is when I eat while talking or visiting with others. I tend to not pay attention to how big a bite I put in my mouth or don't chew well as I run my mouth. PAINFUL.... I usually try to eat alone or cut up all my food before I start.
