Just wondering if it was fairly normal to have a low iron level after surgery? My surgery was 3-2-07 I had my iron checked 4-9-07 it was 24 the normal range on my lab slip was 55-212. Just wondering if anyone else had this same problem????

Hi Donna I actually have had a wonderful month other than a couple episodes with my vitamins not going down correctly and causing severe nausea and abd pain for a short period. I have not really eaten anything that has bothered me of course i have stayed in my guidelines... And thanks! always nice to hear a nice compliment. I have stayed active and had very minimal pain. I have started back at the gym doing weight training and cardio. I also have not had any problems with my protein and fluids if it wasn't for fuzzy naval nectar though I would be hurting. How has your month been?

I did have trouble with Low Iron. They put me two iron pills a day and that did not work. They had to give it to me in an IV form. From what I have been told that this does happen to some people because you can'nt eat enough to get it in at first. I don'nt think it is anything to worry about other than you need to take of it. It is just one of those things that can happen. But it is still worth it because I feel so much better know. I would do this surgery again I had mine in September 2006 and have lost 160lbs. a month ago when I weighed don'nt let these small things get you down. I know they can because it has happened to me. But I pulled out of it. Keep up the good work and remember why you did it.

I'm having trouble with low iron levels too. I am trying to work this out right now and to this point, haven't really received a satisfactory answer. Right now, mine is 39 and Doc Steiner has requested that I start taking 2 amino irons a day. I am doing this, but am wanting to take an iron I received by prescription. Be sure you're taking your iron separate from your calcium and with some vitamin C. I take mine with 1000mg of vitamin C and by itself. (I was taking it with my vitamin also, but was told that was a no-no) I also started taking an iron referred to by a friend (not the prescription strength) from GNC. It has vitamin C and copper in it for better absorption. I'm praying this helps. I've been feeling the fatigue quite heavily lately and I'm hoping this will work itself out soon! Good luck to you-- Dee

Low iron levels can be extremely dangerous. I am anemic anyway, so I have to take 650mgs of iron a day. Just a few tips that might help...I don't know your specific program vitamin requirements, but I have been told that in bypass patients, ferrous fumerate absorbs better than ferrous sulfate. Also, taking vitamin C at the same time with your iron will help it to absorb better. There is a wonderful product over the counter at CVS called Vitron-C. It is iron coated in vitamin-C. Kinda expensive, but really worth it. It helped bring my iron up. Hope this helps some...Best of Luck!
