Hey kids, I'm new here
Hey everyone! I just want to start off by saying this site has been a life saver! Its my Bariatric Bible! I've decided that I want Gastric Bypass (laproscopic) and Monday (the 16th) I go to my family doctor to get a referral. I'm so excited! Does anyone have any tips/advice they want to share with a newbie like me? Feel free to visit my profile and add me as a friend! I love making new friends and meeting new people! Thanks in advance for all the support!
God Bless!
Hello Neighbor, Welcome to the board! I agree this site is a lifesaver. I'd say the best advice for now would be to start walking and doing a little exercise now, It really helped me out before surgery by getting my stamina up a little bit. The doc referral is definately the first thing you'll need...Do you have a surgeon in mind? Take care and good luck to you.

Hey Laura, welcome! Tips, Advice? Well, I can tell ya what I did. I researched surgeons. I already knew I wanted the rny gastric bypass and not the band cause I had alot of weight I wanted to lose and I'm impatient. So my main research was about surgeons. On here we all love our surgeons, they're like heros to us because they've given us this tool that has finally allowed some of us to lose weight after being overweight most of our lives. I chose Mark Shina because I felt like I could trust him with my life and he's never let me down. His wife Holly is also his nurse/office manager and she put it well one of the last times I talked with her on the phone, she says we're family. We share a bond and its true. I know that Dr Tom Sonnastine (probably misspelled that, sorry all Dr Tom patients) is also a wonderful guy (he's cute too, I just saw a pic of him on Michelle's profile and yes I'm a happily married woman but if I see a handsome feller I don't mind saying he's handsome) I'm sure his patients will tell u that he is their hero also. Just find u a good dr that u feel u can trust in your heart. Not sure where Pikeville is. I live in Etown so Dr Shina wasn't far from me at all but I know he has patients that travel from TN, In, and as far as Ashland Ky. He's worth the trip. I wish u the best and if your avatar pic is anything to go by u seem like u are Harry Potter crazy like myself. Feel free to email me, IM me anytime.
Hugs and Best Wishes

HI !! Laura ...and welcome to OH! I think the best info I ever got here was research, research, research!! There will be so many things you thought you knew but the more you know the more you want to know! lol
First off...do you have a surgeon in mind? I had mine done at St. Joeseph East in Lex. and I think I made a very wise choice!! Dr. Steiner is the best!!!
(oh yea by the way...I am originally from Pike Co. myself..so a big hello to a hometown native!)
back to the subject...I dont know what else to say .... I do agree that exercise is a great key to success..it helps with recovery on the long haul and makes it easier to get around right after surgery! make sure when you are doing your research you feel comfortable with your decision..because when you find the right one you'll know it...GOOD LUCK to you!!!! And congratulations on your decision
I wish you all the best!!! WELCOME TO THE LOSERING SIDE!
Cheryl A.

Start exercising now, just learn to move a little. Exercise after surgery is a life saver. You want to maintain muscle while you lose fat. And it will make you feel awesome. I started out exercising in five to seven minute intervals and now I work out 5 days a week for about 1.5 hrs at a time. But I am under the weather now, had gall bladder removed Friday and this is worse than the bypass surgery.
Good Luck
Miranda
Thanks everyone for all your helpful advice and tips!
What kinds of exercises would you reccommend?
I am taking this advice to heart and starting a simple workout routine tomorrow, progressing further as I go along.
I need some good indoor exercises that I can do (its hard to work out when you have an almost 1 year old on your hip), any suggestions?
Once again, you guys and gals rock!
Thanks a bunch and God Bless!

Hey Laura,
Welcome to the Ky board! For me, the best indoor exercise there is, is the fit-ball. I have me a huge ball a friend sent me and it's one of the best gifts I have ever received! I went to the book store and bought an exercise CD to go with it.
When I don't feel like using the CD, I'll put on the 'Soundscape' channel (of soft mood music--the kind they use for relaxing) and just roll around on it. It strengthens the ab muscles and back. (you can get a good low-cardio workout from it too)
Here is a link to the many websites out there that will explain the fit ball better than I. http://www.fitball.com.au/
Good luck to you--
Dee

You people really are a God-send.
Well, I do have some wonderful news!
I went to my family doc today and he recommended me to Dr. Roderick Tompkins at KDMC in Ashland Ky.
So with a couple calls, I have gathered this information:
They DO accept my insurance (Ky Medicaid)
I have a seminar appt for May 3 at 6 pm at the Ramada Inn!
Yay, kids I'm so excited!
My final exams will be over with and done on May 2nd, so no conflict there, thank God!
I'm so excited, and its just the seminar! :jump:
Thanks for the tip darlin! I'll look into getting a Fit Ball!
Loves and God Bless!
