I had been a smoker for 23 years. I have quit again... Does the withdrawl ever end! I have tried all kinds of things to stop smoking in the past. Most recently, Chantix. Nothin has worked so I went cold turkey again. I havent smoked at all for 7 days now. The withdrawls seem worse now then the first 3 days which is what always happened to me before. Even when I am busy, including sleeping. Well that is when I can sleep. The longest I have quit in the past was for a month and a half. Would think I had it licked by then wouldnt u? The withdrawl type feelings never stopped... I have started feeling really down at times now too which I know is a part of withdrawl but with a history of major depression that I have been doin great with for a while now until now, it scares me. Any help and or advice would be great! Thanks!

Bless your heart, I know how hard it is and what you are going through, I quit 3 mos ago, I still crave and it wouldn't take much for me to start back. I smoked for 35 yrs but decided that I wanted to be thin more than smoke. Chantix has worked for me with a lot of prayer and will power. Plus my husband quit too. The girls at work had allready quit months earlier. So have lots of support. Just hang in there and think about the outcome. I'll be here for you whenever you need me. Char

Thank you so much. I have tried to quit before by using the patch, smoke away and then Chantix. Nothin seemed to help so once again cold turkey it is. Odd thing is... I can be craving one so badly and someone can end up smoking around me and I lose the craving... So odd...

Hi Joy, What is the smoking policy for Dr. Shina? My doc is Dr. Geller and my first visit is 4/30/07 so noone has said anything about it yet. I dread it. Sandy

I remember him saying in the seminar that he didnt want us comin in 2 weeks after quiting coughin our heads off where our lungs were trying to clear out and stuff. So no acctual policy was mentioned. I have heard others say their docs required anywhere from 1 to 3 months. Make sure u ask at ur appt.

I require that you quit at least 30 days prior to surgery. Smoking is a worse risk for your health than being overweight, so think of quiting as the first step toward better health. There are many changes that the lungs go thru as you quit smoking. If you were to quit just two weeks prior to surgery, it would actually be more risky than not quiting at all. Quiting at least 30 days prior to surgery helps with the risks. Joy ten years back I just layed my pack down and have never smoked again. I was a two pack a day for thirty four years. Three years after I quit I had lung cancer. Thank God that it was found by a acident and I never even had to take treatment. They got it all. Now I cant stand the smell of smoke and do not want to be around it. I could kick myself for ever doing it. I was told it would help not to eat so much. The crazy things we do to lose weight. It took about six months to not think about it again good luck.

Thank you so much. Another reason I am trying so hard to quit is that cancer is VERY high in my family. Not just for the surgery. But I will admit, the surgery finally kicked it into higher gear for me to quit. You would think when I got diagnosed with so many comorbids it would have made me quit. Wow, what a sickness...

I quit on August 1, 2005 using the NicoDerm patches. It was easy even though I had smoked for 27 years. The only problem that I experienced with the patches was a brief period (10 or 15 minutes) of itching when I would first apply one. I know that I will never pick up another cigarette because I like the way I feel (and smell) now so much more than the way I felt while smoking. I dream about smoking occasionally but that is as far as I will let it back into my life. You can do it, Joy! People do it every day and you can, too -- and you will be soooo proud of yourself!
